Ennistymon Workhouse

The Ennistymon Poor Law Union was officially declared in 1839. The Workhouse was opened in 1842 at a cost of £8,400. It was built to house a maximum capacity of 600 inmates. The Ennistymon Workhouse was built to accomodate people from the areas of Burren, Carron, Corofin, Drumcreehy, Ennistymon, Kilfenora, Killilagh, Killonahan, Kilshanny, Liscanor, Miltown Malbay, Rath, and Rathbourney.

The Ennistymon Workhouse was mostly destroyed in the 1920's and the site is now occupied by the Ennistymon Community Hospital.

Michael O'Brien MD, my great grandfather, was the MO for the workhouse from about 1880 to 1905 and his older brother Daniel O'Brien was MO before him.

On the death of my great granmother Mary (Garrahy) Hayes ( died 1899), wife of Michael Hayes , Lahinch and daughter of Pat Garrahy, my two gran uncles were placed in the Ennistymon Workhouse where they sadly died in infancy.

Daniel Hayes born 1/6/1899 and died 28/3/1900 and John Hayes born 24/3/1898 and died 4/7/1899. I would be grateful if anyone knows where they are buried and if records exist.
