Drenagh, Londonderry, Home of the McCausland Family

Drenagh is a 19th-century house and gardens near Limavady, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Drenagh has been the home of the McCausland family since 1729, and the present house was built in 1835Taken during our trip to Ireland in June 2012.  My great great grandmother, Margaret McCausland, daughter of a Robert McCausland and Mary Patterson, was born Kilrea, Derry in 1825.  For years I have been trying to connect her family with those of Fruithill and Drenagh, without any luck.

The grounds of this property were delightful with many large beautiful trees and flowers.

  • Hello, I have recently researched my Moores of Carrowreagh and Carrowclare townlands in County Derry from the 1600s and the name McCausland came up. These 2 townlands were part of the Manor of Limavady.

In 1697 George Phillips sold the Limavady Estate to William Conolly whose Manor of Limavady eventually went to the McCauslands. In Griffiths 1858 on lots 5 and 6 and 19 in Carrowclare was a Marcus McCausland as Lessor. He was replaced as Lessor in the 1860-63 Revision by CJW McCausland  and was recorded as Lessor until and including the 1910-20 Revision.

Also, on a 01 August 1769 land document  for Carrowreagh for Edward Moore passing his lands (leased) to his son Nathan Moore these names were at the bottom of the document - (? can't decipher) McCausland – Marcus McCausland and Conolly McCausland (Source is Crossle Genealogical Abstracts (on FMP) Parcel 1A 32-22 v. M. National Archives of Ireland – Derry Wills – Life Events BDM).

The original document for this was the 04 April 1700 Indenture between William Conolly of Newhall in County Londonderry Esq and James Moor of Carrowreagh in said County, Gentleman. For that equal half townland of Carrowreagh part of the Manor of Limavady, now in the occupancy of said James Moor (PRONI ref D/1550 (Doc 3 - 7 pgs). The Edward of 1769 was the brother of James of 1700.

For my research a paid researcher in Norther Ireland advised the following in his report:

Minute Books and Records of the Corporation of Limavady (location not indicated)

In order to work or trade in Limavady a person had to be made a “freeman” There was generally a “fine” ie a monatery charge made for this privilege

    29th September 1733

George Moore and John Moody appointed to be Applotters {charged with collecting the annual Tithe {tax} imposed by the Church of Ireland.

    Robert McCausland appointed Provost of Limavady {Mayor}

(Italics is a comment from the researcher in NI).

Robert McCausland of Fruit Hill Limavady, succeeded under the Will of the Right Hon William Conoly or Conolly, Speaker of the Irish Parliament and supposed at his death to be Ireland’s richest man,{having been born the son of an inn keeper} to considerable estates in the County of Londonderry

He (my query - Robert McCausland?) married Hannah Moore daughter of William Moore of Garvey Tyrone and died 1734 leaving issue.

He (Robert McCausland?) was the great great great great grandfather of Mr Marcus McCausland DL of Drenagh Limavdy.

The family owned substantial Estates in and around Limavady and the present heir is Conolly McCausland of Fruit Hill. The Moores of Carrowreagh and Carrowclare were later to purchase their freeholds from the Conolly Estate

I hope the above helps. The Robert MCausland above died in 1734 a child of his issue might be the Robert McCausland father of Margaret born 1825.  Limavady is 19 miles from Kilrea.

  • It's probaby there in Garvagh.
Honestly not sure as this Garvey is more likely their Manor estate. Anna Moore b 1650 dau of Wm Moore md Robert Stewart of Stuart Hall which was near Stewartown, co Tryone. The Hamilton were all Strabane folks as Hannah dau of another Wm moore of Garvey who probably (Wm) md Rebecca Lowery was first md to James hamilton jr of Strabane. The Lowery started at Ballymacorry. My Hamilton brother was John hamilton of Cumber in Derry co. These folks had so much money that distance did not limit them. Burke had fruit hill /Denagh McCausland lineage. I have several McCausland lines. One of Cappagh parish Claud McCausland md Sarah Ann Maxwwell but last record I have Orange Lodge in Londonderry buried there. I finally had dna autosomal match to Francis McCaslin and booth who ended up in western Pa. My Claud McCausland is from Alexander McCausland and Margaret hamilton. They come from same ancestor that Robert did, desc of Andrew McCausland whose wife maybe Sarah Connolly. Robert McCausland was land agent for Wm Connolly. So is this Garvagh a town, townland, parish? My Hamilton land was in Antrim co at place called Ballynagarvey which most likely manor. Always wonder about this. Do you have given name Rose in your Moore's? Rose ? Md Col James Hamilton from Ballymacorry, their dau rachel md oliver McCausland son of oliver. I know that my rep dna match between desc of hannah Moore McCausland and hamilton distant relative, but the connections are many so can not say if it's moore, McCausland or Hamilton,. Love to know more about Moore's. Is Dr samuel moore part of your group? Mike barr. mgbarr525@aol.com

  • Hello, Mike,

I don't think we have the same Moores.

    From this link

    https://www.johngrenham.com/places/simple_results.php?place=garvey&submit=Submit

There is a Garvey in Co Tyrone so I think from what you say below it is Garvey Co Tyrone and not Garvagh

    Co Derry you have.

Moore is a pretty common surname which is why it took me 2 years to investigate and pinpoint mine who started in the City of Derry in the 1600s and by late 1600s moved east to the townlands of Carrowreagh and Carrowclare near Limavady.

Moore is derived from Mur or similar in Scotland and Moores in North Ireland came from either Scotland or England and I'm not 100% sure which for mine.

Mine were tenant farmers and their only connection with McCausland was renting some of their land. And the information I put on Ireland XO came from when I was researching mine. And mine certainly did not have a Manor Estate.

Your people mentioned below are more upper class and I have no connection to any you mention. Nor to Strabane and other locations in County Tyrone.

Irish ancestry is difficult and if you are from the McCauslands they were more prominent than my people and by googling you might find someone has done research on them. Otherwise you'd probably need to engage a researcher in Northern Ireland.

Good luck with your research - I'd say you had a good chance of finding out more about your people as they were so prominent. Maybe put your queries in a different area of the Ireland XO site just under McCausland.

Or this is a pretty good forum for getting help on family history https://www.rootschat.com/forum/ireland/

Just join, and you can use an existing heading or start your own Topic and it is surprising how many people can provide some useful information.
