The Larne Poor Law Union was officially declared in 1840. The Workhouse was opened in 1842 at a cost of £5,322. It was built to house a maximum capacity of 400 inmates. The Larne Workhouse was built to accomodate people from the areas of Ardelinis, Ballycor, Ballynure, Carncastle, Carrickfergus, Glenam, Glencoy, Glynn, Island Magee, Kilwaughter, Larne, Raloo, and Templecorran.
During the worst years of the Great Famine, extensions were put in place to accomodate a further 130 inmates.
The Larne Workhouse was closed in 1917. In 1928, the Larne Workhouse site was repurposed as the Larne District Hospital. A number of the original buildings are still standing today.
