Lisnaboll aka Lisnabul TOWNLAND

Kilmacumsy (Roscommon) County Roscommon

Lios na bPoll (lit. 'fort of the holes') aka Lisnaboll townland is located north-west of Elphin and just 2 townlands north of Shankill townland. It was also recorded as Lisnabull, Lisnapoole, Lisnapoll, Lissnabol, Lisnabul, Lisnabol, Lisnabule) has three old forts on it, one of which is situated on the southern boundary.

In 1810, the following couples were residing at Lisbabul when they baptised their children in Elphin RC:

• Michael Kelly & Mary Flanagan invited Thady Flanagan & Mary Nolan, Edmund Flanigan & Mary Coffey, Barnaby McGrath & Brigid Kelly to godparent

• Barnaby McGrath aka McGraugh invited William Beirne & Winifred Kevaghan to godparent 

• Barnaby aka Bartholomew McDermott & (unknown spouse) invited ? Tansy to godparent 

• Patrick McDermott & Margaret Tighe invited  Barnaby McDermott & Eleanor Beirne to godparent 

• Mark Lannon and Celia Gray invited John Bolon and Brigid Mullaney to godparent. 

• Thomas Caslin aka Casland and Mary Brennan invited Michael & Mary Nolan, Peter Caslin & Margaret Oates to godparent. 

• Peter Caslin and Eleanor 'Helen' Nolan invited Michael Flanagan & Brigid Nolan, John Beirne & Catherine Kane, John Naughan aka Nolan, Simon Nolan & Sally Caslin to godparent. 

• Patrick Callaghan and Margaret Flanagan invited Michael Egan & Elizabeth Beirne  to godparent. 

• Michael Flanagan & Margaret Kelly invited Patrick & Mary Caslin to godparent in 1827.

• Francis Flanagan & Honor Flanagan invited Michael Walsh & Elizabeth Phelan aka Filan to godparent in 1840.

 

In 1824, the following were recorded in Tithe Applotment Records at Lisnaboll

• Michael Kelly (& Mary Flanagan)  4 Irish acres 

• Frank Flanagan  18 Irish acres

• Darby aka Jeremiah Dockry 5 Irish acres

• Thomas Caslin (& Mary Brennan) 5 Irish acres

• Simon Nolan & partners 7 Irish acres (who also had 29 Irish acres in the neighbouring townland of Teermore)

• Patrick aka Patt Nolan & partners 7 Irish acres

By 1857, a decade after the Great Famine, only two households were recorded in Griffiths Valuation:

Farm #1a William Nolan 43 statute acres (herd's house valued £1)

Farm #2a Francis Flanigan aka Frank Flanagan 55 statue acres (house valued £2)

From 1865 to 1873, Martin McDermott (farmer) & Mary Nolan were baptising here. Phillip Costello (labourer) & Mary Shannon were in Lisnabul in 1868. 

From 1876 to 1882, John & Catherine Nolan were baptising here.

Mary McDermott (sister of Bernard McDermott) & Thomas Cullen were present in 1891. Michael Lampert & Joan Owens were here briefly in 1899. This family emigrated to Manchester. 

 

In the Census of 1911 only the households of Catherine Nolan (John's widow) and that of  Bernard & Delia McDermott were recorded here.
