The Manorhamilton Poor Law Union was officially declared in 1839. The Workhouse was opened in 1842 at a cost of £6,387. It was built to house a maximum capacity of 500 inmates. The Manorhamilton Workhouse was built to accomodate people from the areas of Cloonlogher, Drumahaire, Drumkeeran, Inishmagrath, Killanummery, Killarga, Kiltyclogher, Lurganboy, Manorhamilton, and Rossiniver.
In 1922, following the formation of the Irish Free State, the Manorhamilton Workhouse was repurposed as the county home. The original buildings were later demolished and the site is now occupied by the county hospital.
