My 3x great grandfather Thomas Wylie died in the Workhouse 1889
The Monaghan Poor Law Union was officially declared in 1839. The Workhouse was opened in 1842 at a cost of £7,807. It was built to house a maximum capacity of 900 inmates. The Monaghan Workhouse was built to accomodate people from the areas of Anketell Grove, Bellanode, Caddagh, Castleshane, Clones, Clontibret, Derrygola, Drumhillagh, Drumsnat, Emyvale, Figgular, Glaslough, Killylough, Monaghan, Rackwallace, Scots Town, Sheskin, Tedavnet, Tehallan, and Tullycorbet.
During the worst years of the Great Famine extensions were put in place to accomodate and additional 300 inmates.
The Monaghan Workhouse closed in 1921. None of the original buildings ow survive and the site has been redeveloped for housing.
