The National Museum of Ireland - Country Life is situated in Turlough, just a short 10-minute drive from the town of Castlebar.
It is set on the spectacular grounds of Turlough Park, comprising of 37 acres of beautifully manicured gardens. The galleries showcase the traditions of rural life throughout Ireland from the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century. It is the home to the National Folklife Collection and is the only national museum outside of Dublin.
Browsing through the many artifacts, you will learn how ordinary people lived their lives. You can follow their lives throw the seasons at work and at home. You will learn about their crafts, their clothing, and their religion. Also, open to the public at Turlough Park, is part of Turlough Park House which was the ancestral home of the Fitzgerald family.
the museum offers guided tours, workshops, demonstrations, activities, and many more learning opportunities for people of all ages. There is also a museum shop and the Museum Cafe.
