The Stardust Memorial was created in remembrance of the heartbreaking loss of young lives in the Stardust Tragedy of 1981.

In the early hours of St. Valentine’s Day 1981, a fatal fire broke out in the Stardust Nightclub. Within 15 minutes of the first sighting of the fire the entire complex was completely gutted. With the main fire escape doors padlock, escape was greatly impeded resulting in the death of 48 young people and a further 214 injured. The community of Artane, Kilmore and greater Coolock was devastated, with many parents losing multiple children in the tragedy.

The story of the 48 children who never came home was immortalised by Christy Moore in his song "They Never Came Home".
