Graziers house at Tawlaght

Teach Thamhlachta aka Tawlaght House was part of the estate of John Keogh Esq. in this district. The house and grazing farm at Tawlaght was leased in to the grazier John Dowd of Ryefield (formerly of Cartron).

Although Dowd is named on the house in 1839 (when it was valued at £4 10s) he was sub-letting it to his son-in-law Pat Boyd & Brigid Dowd (1816-1894) who were baptising children in Croghan as early as 1839.  Michael O'Dowd Esq. (1817-1893) of Meera House was Brigid's brother.

In 1857, Tawlaght House was occupied by Patrick Boyd (1815-1873) who sat on the Grand Jury for Boyle that year.  In the 1860s he was a chairman of the Carrick-on-Shannon Union Board of Guardian.

In 1869, their daughter, Catherine Boyd was residing with her maternal grandfather at Ryefield House when she wed Martin Carney of Crevolan. In 1872, their daughter, Mary Anne Boyd was residing with her uncle Hugh Boyd (1800-1880) of Ballinvilla when she wed Patrick Collins of Canbo.  In 1881, their daughter Brigid Boyd married Patrick Carroll of Carrowmore (son of Pat Carroll & Brigid Mullaney).

The house and farm passed on to his son, William Boyd (1850-) & Kate Killilea of Tullyleague who were present at Tawlaght in 1901 and 1911

The old longhouse at Tawlaght is still extant today as farm outbuildings.
