On the 26th of July, 1987, Stephen Roche from Dundrum, Co. Dublin, became the first Irish person to win the coveted Tour de France cycling competition. Roche won under the general classification, bringing home the famed yellow jersey to Ireland for the first time. The win made Roche a household name in Ireland where he would go on to appear in adverts and branding for Irish companies.
