In 1828, the names of persons who held land in the civil parish of Monagea/ Monagay, Co.Limerick, were entered in a book. This was a country wide procedure. These records are now held by the the National Archive of Ireland, in Dublin, and can be viewed online, without a payment. The official name of these Records is Tithe Applotment Books. People who held land/were tenant farmers had to pay a tax to support the upkeep of their local Church of Ireland clergy. The majority of farmers were not members of the the Church of Ireland, the State Church, and resented paying this tax on their land. The government at Westminister, London, changed the law, in due course, and in 1870, the Church of Ireland cesaed to be a State Church. (150 years ago, and this year the event is being commemorated.)
Ireland is left with a useful set of Records which may help us find our ancestors. I am researching Nash families in Monagea, and have found 8 in the Tithes. In records such as these, you get the name of the person whose name is on the lease, plus details of the amount and quality of the land he or she is holding.
I have come across two Nash families in the townland of Ballymonagh Jeffons. My problem is that I don't know where the townland is, and the only reference to it that I have found online is in the Tithes. I noticed that another member has already found a name in this townland. It is likely that the townland is now under a diferent name. If anyone can tell me where it is or by what name Ballymonagh Jeffors is now known, I will be very grateful.
