Lovely people, I wonder if anyone is able to help me find any trace of my acnestors from Thurles. Michael, Ann and Mary Gilmartin emigrated to Australia in 1858 in their early 20s. Mary was born about 1838, Michael was born about 1842, and Ann about 1843. Their parents were listed as Thomas (or John) Gilmartin and Johanna or Joanna Dwyer. There may also have been another brother John, or even more siblings. Different sources list them as being from "Glenouty Thurles Side" and from "Glenarty, Thurlside" but I can find no place by this name. I have combed the free baptism registers but found no Gilmartins baptised at Thurles at the right time, they were def Roman Catholic in Australia. I would be most grateful for any assistance or suugestions. There seem to be lots of Dwyers but Gilmartin is more unusual! With many thanks, Jess Miller, Australia.

Oh my goodness Jane, thank you so much! That is wonderful! I am most grateful to you for very kindly helping me and I am rapt to have found where my ancestors were from! I will have to try and find out what happened to Margaret too! My great grandmother, Michael's daughter, was also a Margaret. I'm very excited and will look up the register, presumably will have more luck in the correct parish. I guess Thurles must be the closest biggest town as all their death entries in Australia had Thurles. Thank you again Jane! Warm regards, Jess

Hello Jess,
I live just outside of Geelong in Victoria. My mother was a Gilmartin and she had an uncle Michael Gilmartin (1842-1914) who was born in Thurleside. My mothers family sailed from Liverpool 15 April 1858 and arrived in Melbourne 17 August 1858 then settled in Colac.
It seems we maybe related and would love to catch up. I intend tio be in Ireland in August 2019.
