Children of Loughlin Toner and Betty McGeeney

You mention Loughlin dying in 1852, and then dying again in 1888. Who is the Loughlin who died in 1852? Is that the 2nd Loughlin’s father?

I note these probate abstracts in PRONI:

Letters of Administration (with the Will annexed) of the personal estate of Loughlin Toner late of Corranure County Armagh Farmer deceased who died 18 April 1852 at same place were granted at Armagh to Elizabeth Toner of Corranure (Glenanne) Widow the Residuary Legatee.

Probate of the Will of Loughlin otherwise Laughlin Toner late of Maytone County Armagh Farmer who died 21 March 1888 granted at Armagh to Michael Toner of Drumcrow said County Farmer.

Letters of Administration (with the Will) of the unadministered estate of Loughlin Toner late of Carranure County Armagh Farmer who died 18 April 1852 were granted at Armagh to Elizabeth Finnegan. (Wife of B. Finnegan) (Former grant 14 March 1878)

The first two wills are on-line. The first mentions various children. The second mentions Patrick, but also Sarah Margaret & Charles.

Toner Malachy of Maytone Glenanne county Armagh farmer died 9 December 1947 Probate Belfast 22 April to Frank Feenan farmer and Felix MacKeown auctioneer. Effects £815 1s. 4d.

Thanks Elwyn. The Loughlin who died in 1888 is a different person entirely - he was somewhat older than my Loughlin and I've found children for him from 1832 to 1844. I mentioned him because he also had a son called Patrick. I think the other Loughlin's Patrick was the father of Malachy Toner, who is a relation by marriage. 

The 1852 grant was to Loughlin's wife Elizabeth (Betty). When she died in 1900 she left the farm to her youngest daughter Catherine who was married to my GGF Patrick Shields. The subsequent grant on my Loughlin's will was to Catherine's older sister Elizabeth I believe.

Thank you for the information about Hugh and Frank Toner. I found a Hugh Toner living with his sister Catherine, maybe Frank is another sibling. I have no idea who their parents might be.

James Toner who died in 1943 is interesting - Malachy's second son was called James so I will have a look at him.

What I really need is baptism records in Loughgilly between 1845 and 1848 but these don't seem to be online and may not exist.

My guide to RC records suggests that the baptism records for Loughgilly for 1845 -1848 are lost. No easy way around that I am afraid.

Is this still alive conversation? I’ve just stumbled upon this and I believe that I have discovered our connection to Margaret Toner, of this family. I believe that she married John Hanlon.

Hi Ginny, yes I am still very interested in this. I have no information on Margaret at all aside from the mention in Loughlin's will. Do you have a date of the marriage to John Hanlon or details of any children? I don't have a subscription to Roots Ireland at the moment but in the past I have found useful information about baptism sponsors that suggest (but don't prove) I might have the right family. I don't suppose any descendants of Margaret have a DNA test on Ancestry or MyHeritage? Cheers, Doreen

Oh, how exciting. Yes, I believe the marriage is 6 Jun 1858 • Ireland. Hopefully I attached it correctly. Her name is Margaret Anne and in this record it is Anne. There is a Mary Toner marrying Francis O'Hanlon just above.

In one child's baptism records it is Mary Ann Joner, but on the document you can see that it it is Marg. Ann Toner.

Children - James, Thomas, Rose Ellen, Patrick Peter, John, Teresa, Elizabeth, Margaret and then another John as the older one died.

And yes, there is DNA on Ancestry of my mom and aunt. Me to but theirs are closer.

It isn't definitive yet, but a very workable theory, with DNA back up. They are all so close and jumbled. I THINK that I just connected her husband John Hanlon, to a DNA trail. It has been an exceptionally good week for me!

Hi Ginny. I don't have any info on Betty McGeeney's parents I'm afraid. Do you have birth dates/places for the children you mention? I had a quick look on the Irish Genealogy site but without a year of birth there are a lot of records to look at. My Ancestry DNA is under my name - I have matches with some McGeeney descendants and lots of Shields family - I haven't reliably identified people that I can say are specifically Toner descendants. It would be interesting to know if I matched with your mum or your aunt.

I am disappointed to not find you in my mother's or aunts DNA. Which will mean to me that Margaret is not my GG grandmother. We took a little leap with a DNA match with McGeeney's and hoping that Catherine McGeeney who married a Boyle was Betty's sister. Tell me if you agree.

I will message you on Ancestry, so you can see the dates etc for the children of Elizabeth Toner and John o'Hanlon.
