My Great-Great Grandfather, Michael J Doyle, married Mary (Molly) Sutton in Ferns 4 Aug 1861 (marriage cert attached). I believe he was born in Ballylough in 1836 and she in Enniscorthy in 1829. Again, I believe he died in 1881 in Castlebridge but I know she died in Carleton Place, Ontario, Canada in 1910 (death cert attached). Her parents were Lawrence Sutton and Mary Perral or Parral.

There is a Doyle's Bar on Upper Main St in Ferns. Whether they are relations is unknown as yet.

I have looked in all the cemetery records for Wexford but have not been able to find any record of Michael's burial. Nor have I been able to find any birth records.

Any and all help would be appreciated.

  • Hello

I belong to the Doyle family my relatives lived in Enniscorthy my mum & dad lived in Ferns but they sadly passed away last year, but I was trying to trace my roots which has been very difficult as the church records had been distroyed leaving me nothing to go on. I know of the Doyles Bar you have been talking about, as I visited Ferns where my parents lived, my Mother is buried in Enniscorthy with her mother, I'm wondering if you have any present information on the Doyle family from the Wexford area. I also know there are Doyles who still live in Gorey which is near to ferns. I will ask my uncle next time I speak to him if he knows of a Mary Sutton from Ferns & will be able to let you know.

You could try the church in Ferns (if you havent already) St Aidens they have a website which lots of history they might be able to help too.

    Good luck!

  • Crystal, thank you so much for your reply. It would be of great interest to find out what your Uncle might know of my ancestors.

I have no information on any Doyles in or around the Wexford area but then, I haven't been as diligent in trying to contact any as I might be. So far I have been using only the online genealogical sites to try an determine family members. I plan on expanding that search by going through current telephone directories to obtain names and addresses, then send off some letters and hope for a lucky connection.

Should such an efort produce any results I will post them here. And, I would certainly appreciate any information you come across. If you happen to drop into the Doyle Bar, have a pint for me, will you?

  • Hello Michael

Not had chance to speak to my uncle as yet he's away, but as soon as he's back I'll ask him if he has any information which might help you...

With trying to research the Doyles myself I came across this website:- https://www.ireland.anglican.org/cmsfiles/pdf/AboutUs/library/AngRecord… it does show a Mary Sutton but unsure on the dates. Hope you can open the webpage.

Be next year before I go over to ferns I plan to go each year to put flowers on Mums grave, such a long way from the uk to keep popping over often...but if I get chance I will enquire in the Doyles pub to see if anyone has any information on Mary Sutton.

  • Thank you, Crystal. I really appreciate this. I can easily open the link and did so, only to find that half the population of Ireland at the time were Doyles (or so it seems). There are also several Suttons that I can track down. Although many Doyles were R.C., a branch of the family in Canada were Protestant and there were even some Quakers in the group. Religious they were, but just didn't care to which church they belonged. HaHa.

Thanks again, and I look forward to hearing from you when you've had a chance to speak with your Uncle. Please give him my regards, and I extend them to you as well.

  • Hello all,
I am looking for relatives of Mary Doyle from Moneytucker, Davidstoewn/Ferns Wexford. She was born in about 1817. I believe she had brothers Patrick and Timothy, parents Eleanor Doyle and John Doyle.

I am hopeful that you other Doyles here might be family? I went to the RC church at Davidstown and took pictures of every Doyle headstone there. I will cross reference to see if anyone mentioned in these posts are there. I came across feathers while i was there so I am hopeful it is a sign.

    Hello,

My Mother was a Doyle who lived in Ferns, born in Enniscorthy I have traced my family back to the 1800's so far. My grandad was James Doyle who lived in Enniscorthy born 1889, his father was Michael Doyle. There is a village called clohamon in Kilrush that has a few headstones with the name Doyle which might be of interest.

I've yet to get the history of my grandad Doyles side of the family, I know he had a sister called Mary Kate Doyle born 1885, not sure if thats any help!
