I am looking for information about Thomas P Fennessey and family. His marriage record in the US lists Tipperary as his home county, his Father's name as David Fennessey and Mother's name as Joanna Hanlon. I have found a baptism record online for Ballylooby. Baptism date 06 March 1859.  I have also seen baptism records for the same date for Eleanor(sp?) a twin, for Michael 1860 and John Patrick 1868.  I am looking to confirm that I actually have found my great-grandfather and his family. John Patrick also came to the US. I have no info on Thomas' parents or his other two siblings.  Any help greatly appreciated..

  • Hi, I found there were many more brothers and sisters to your Thomas (see files below from rootsireland.)  There were two Ellens, which was not unusual in Irish families if the first one died and the name was significant to the family.  The records for Ellen and Mary were civil records which showed where the family lived when the child was born.  Mary's civil registration listed the family living at Clogheeafishoge which I couldn't find but believe it is near the town of Clogheen. Ellen's civil record showed the family living in Rehill which is just west of Ballylooby.  You can google it and see where it is exactly.  Let me know if this is your family.  Thanks.  Rob Anglin

  • Hi Rob. Thank you so much for your efforts!  I believe this is my family. I am so happy to have a location a bit more specific than Co. Tipperary. When travel is allowed again, I plan to visit and walk where my family walked so long ago.  As to the two Ellen's, my grandparents did the same with the name Walter for their firstborn who only lived two days and then for their fourth child.  And now I have more family to research which is good.  I found David and Johanna's marriage in February 1858 in online Church records. But no parents names. Do you know if that might be in a civil record?

    again thank you,

    Tom Riley

  • Hi,

I will visit Ireland in May and plan to visit Ballylooby, Rehill, and Clogheeafishoge.  Is the church in Ballylooby where the children were baptized and David and Joanna still in use? I would love to go there and stand where they stood.  Also, are they any records for David Fennessey and Joanna Hanlon Fennessey's deaths?  And are their cemeteries which might hold their graves? Around the church or in the villages?

    Thank you.

    Tom

  • Tom,

I think David Fennessey was baptized in Cahir Roman Catholic Church on 22 June 1838.  His father's name was Thomas Fennessey and his mother's name was Margaret Condon.  James Lonergan and Honora Slattery were the baptism sponsors.  The reason I believe this is that in the Irish Naming Tradition the first son was named after the father's father.  Your Thomas Fennessey was first born so this makes sense.  (The rest of the naming tradition is that the second boy is named after the mother's father.  The first girl is named after the mother's mother and the second girl is named after the father's mother.  The naming tradition goes on but I think it is TMI for what you are doing.)  If you're curious look up Traditional Irish Naming Traditions on Google.  I would have posted what I found here but I don't know how to do it now!  Good luck in Ireland next month and happy hunting!
