I have recently become an Irish citizen through my grandfather Michael Patrick Geoghegan who was from Carney (Karney?) Kelly in Athenry, County Galway. He was born in February 1874. His father was Thomas Geoghegan and his mother was Sabina Lyons. He emigrated to the USA and married Bridget Delia Flynn who was originally from Tuam, County Galway. I am wondering if there are any Geighegan's still in the Athenry area to whom I might be related. Any information woulkd be appreciated.

Irish Joe:
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
The family lived in Carnakelly North townland which is in Kilconnell civil parish which is actually about four parishes to the east of Athenry parish.
You may have these records but below are the links to the 1901 and 1911 censuses. No children were shown living with Thomas and Sabina. Sabina died in 1909 and the third link has her death record (last record on the page). Thomas died in 1914. As far as I can see on the subscription site Roots Ireland, they only had two children Michael and a daughter Mary born 1876. Likely Mary also emigrated. I searched on the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie for a marriage record for her from 1895-1911 and did not find a record.
On the Thomas' death record, the informant was a cousin named Patrick Reilly. So if you have any Geoghegan relatives, still in the area, they would be very distant relations.
Let me know if you have questions.

Thank you so much for this information.
I did not know my great grandfather had a sister Mary.
Nor did I know their dates of death.
I much appreciate your taking the time to look these up and answer.
