Thank you Paul for your kind reply. I live in the area of Tullamore but we have little contact with the other families.
I dont do DNA as this does not tell the real history about the families and their associations.
Thanks Geraldine for the family tree and information. I would be interested to know if John b.1857 had a brother Michael.
I know who the prevous generations were and the name Denis was central in all of the families.
Note.Matt Buckley married Eler Heylon 6-1812 Rahan. The name Eler/Eleanor can be traced back many centuries in the famely.
I was working on a story in the local papers from the 1920s and noticed a Fr. Smith. He may have been working in the parish of Rahan at that time, could you assist me with my reserch please.
Kind regards

Hello Paul sorry for the delay as I have not been keeping a eye on this platform.
Your ggrandmother was born in a cottage beside the grand canal near Ballycowan Bridge Tullamore.
Her sister married your ggranduncle January. 1877.
If you go to Kilbride Cemetery near Tullamore you may find a memorial with a previous generation inscribed on it.
I have other information but I prefer to deliver this in private, hope you understand.
Thank you Geraldine for your reply.
Yes, I did find more on Fr.Smith as you said he was Very Well Known and respected in the area.
He was on the board of guardians in about 1920 and was instrumental in brining about the new administration after the troubles of the 1920's.
Both your own information and Pauls are connected via the land association with the Brisco family who were in the area from the mid 16th century.
Offaly History are zooming a lecture on the plantation of Offaly from the Tuder times. This could be used in you reserch on local landed families activities.
Kind regards
Theo.

Hi from Queensland, Everyone!
I was so excited to find this post. I too have Helion relatives whom I'd love to find out more info about.
My g g grandfather and g g grandmother, Patrick Helion and Catherine Toole, emigrated to Brisbane, Australia, in 1862 on the "Erin Go Bragh". The poor couple lost three kids on the voyage, one of whom was listed as my g grandfather, William Helion. Luckily for me, the authorities had listed the wrong child - it was his brother, Denis - or I wouldn't be here writing this!
Patrick and Catherine were married in 1846 in Kilcloon, Batterstown and Kilcock in Meath and Kildare.
Patrick's parents were William Helion and Mary Rigney. His brothers and sisters were Elenor, Catherine, Denis and 2 Annes and they were all baptised from 1811 to about 1825 in Rahan in Offaly.
Catherine Toole's parents were John Toole and Anne Carney. She had three sisters -Judith, Elizabeth and Anne - and they were all baptised from 1821 to 1828. Catherine, I know, was baptised in Kilbeggan, Westmeath.
Do any of those names ring any bells with you folks on here?
It's wonderful having this here because we can share any information, whether it's in our trees or not, and help each other.
Thanks fellow diggers!

Hello Marie,
Welcome to the OX Healion/Helion message board.
I posted a message yesterday 3ed July, however it did not appear so here go's again.
The Erin GO BAGH was a ship that was slected to deport people from the Digby Estate ,Offaly in 1862 who were forced from there tenancies by the notorious psychotic William Stewart Trench and his son. There is a title book of the (Management Of The Digby Estate ,King's County,1857-71 by Mary Delaney). You can sacure a copy from Offaly History Centre online.
I have information on the people you are inquiring about. It is importent to get our ducks in a row so I ask you what were the first names of the two siblings who perished on the crossing, it will determin the lineage of your people.
I live on the former Digby Estate and have reserched the people and places as well as the plantation after 1690... in some places bordering on the estate. It is a large area.
The O'Toole/Toole famely marriages after this period are interesting too.
Hope this is of help to you.
Can you send some of your sun this way please!

Gidday Theo
How wonderful to hear from you and what a frisson of excitement your news gave me
There actually were three poor darlings who perished on the voyage - William was listed as one aged 8 but he is my great grandfather who was nearly 10 at the time.
They were Catharine Helion 8 months, Dennis Helion 4 and William Helion 8 but this last should have been John who was 8 at the time.
Thanks for the information about the book - can’t wait to get hold of it.
Is it a bit rainy over there at the moment? Isn’t it a shame we can’t get more rain, though this winter has been good for that, and you can’t get more sun? We are spoilt over here for that..
I hope the Covid situation over there isn’t too bad, Theo. We’re so lucky over here being isolated. When I was young, I used to bemoan that fact but now it’s considered a blessing, of course..
Thanks so much for taking the time to write back I’d love to find out the connections further back

Hello Marie,
The ages of the childern are a little out but you are on the right track!
They were all baptised in the small town of Kilcormac (RC records 1821-1899).Lots of Rigneys there.
I have looked at the sponsors and seen they are related to my line, in fact most of the Helions from this area and time were related.
Going back to William Helion b.abt 1780's.He had three othere brothers. There father lived in Annamore, close to the Digby Estate. this is were the trouble starts in the 1860's with the Trenches'.
I have reserched the fameily further back, but prefer that people do there own reserch and then compare as this would give more clarity and good solid reference.
Mary Delaney's book is a very good account of what happend and I have reserched other sources to back up what had happend. I would like you to read this title first as you will get a good sence of the people and area. There is a mention of Helion in it, and Trench used the the famely crest as his own! I'm sure he didn't know it at the time.
I have also reserched the Digby's line from the 13th Century. and am of the oppinion that Reginald Digby was not fully aware of what was going on.
Also if you can get a good ordnance survey map of offaly that would help you greatly.
Lastly, I would like you and anyone looking at this post to know that the Helions have a interesting history and well worth delving into. They were associated with a lot of historic events that shaped the way we are today. The records and references are there you just need to add a little imagination.
Unfortunately the Covid has taking many of our friends and people around us in the last year or so and they are never to fare from or minds.
It will rain for the next few days here.... good for the grass!
My PM. helion1066(at)gmail(dot)com
If you wish to contact me or anyone else who has connections to the famely.
Kind regards
Theo.

Hi Healion cousins, I am another Aussie, from NSW. My great grandparents were John Healion and Mary Ann Mulpeter, who married at St. Carthage's RC Rahan parish on 2 January 1882. His parish was listed as Killeagh and hers as Cloonagh. The witnesses are listed as John Harlan (Killeagh) and Kate Mulpeter (Cloonagh).
John died in Armidale, NSW in July 1890 leaving Mary Ann with five children and a sixth who arrived in 1891. According to his death certificate he was 39 at the time of his death and must have been born approximately 1856. His father is listed as James Healion and his mother Mary Doak.
Mary Ann was the daughter of Mary Dunne and Joseph Mulpeter. She raised her children and remarried in 1908, in Sydney. She returned to Ireland at least twice, returning to Australia, via England, in 1914.
while I know about their Australian story, I have not been able to identify their Irish family story. Any help would be much appreciated. Pat

Hello Pat and welcome to Ireland Reaching Out
Do you mind me suggesting
that I think you should post your query as a new thread as there is a lot of different things going on here and your message might get lost (Now its only a suggestion, hope you dont mind)
Can I ask you have you a marriage cert for Mary Ann Mulpeter and John Healion, I cannot find one
Geraldine Buckley-Smith, Ireland XO Volunteer

Hi Geraldine, Never found a marriage certificate for them but did visit the Church and the priest made the relevant page of the register available. He also found MaryAnn's siblings baptisms. So I have a photo of the page of the register. But when I visited your equivalent of Births, deaths and marriages, I found the marriage did not seem to have been registered as a civil marriage.

Hello Pat,
Your Helion family and that of Marie share similar background and route to Australia. The tread is [Fr.Patrick Dunne 1818/9-1900].Ref: TJ LINANE,THE LIGHT OF OTHER DAYS:Fr Patrick Dunne's career,1866-1900:in light,(Ballarat Diocesan Magazine) June 1968:p.19
I have also a essey here that may add more depth to the title below.
Title book of the (Management Of The Digby Estate ,King's County,1857-71 by Mary Delaney). You can secure a copy from Offaly History Centre online. This will give you a good idea of the area at the time of migration.
John (Harlan) (Halian) (Killeagh) maybe an uncle?
[She returned to Ireland at least twice, returning to Australia, via England, in 1914]. Have you any dates for these crossings please, as the year is very important to the events in the area.
Kind regards
Theo.

Hi Theo,
I cannot find any records of John and Mary Ann's travel to Australia. Last record in Ireland is their marriage. Mary Ann's family are on the 1901 &1911 census, still on the same farm. John 's family is unknown. I have checked out a number of family's with the Healion /Helion surname but so far they don't seem to connect. I have DNA matches with a number of Offaly connections but we cannot find the common connection. John and Mary Ann left Ireland in early 1882 and appear working on the Great Northern Railway Line in late 1882. Their first child was born at Glen Innes in September/October 1882. They had six children and she had no children from her second marriage.
It has been suggested they travelled to Australia via England ona ship for Proudfoot's railway workers but I haven't been able to find the records in Australia nor New Zealand and they are most probably lost.
John died on 4 June 1890 and is buried at Armidale, NSW. Mary Ann returned to Ireland in 1910 and 1914. Shentravelled as MaryAnn Seery, her second marriage. She left England and arrived in Sydney, aboard Orsova, on 5 November 1914. The Orsova left Australia as a troop transport to Egypt a few weeks later. Her mother died,on the family farm, on 17 January 1917. Mary Ann never returned to Ireland again. She died on 12 August 1940, aged 78 years.
I have found Mary Ann's baptism, 23 March 1862 at Killeagh RC a church. I have only found one baptism for John Helion born about 1853 and that was to a Thomas and Mary Dunn at Killeagh RC church. His death certificate states his parents were James and Mary Doak.

Hello Pat,
I can see the light in your search for John however, I wolud like to know the address of the Dunn/Dunne family home farm please.I am working on a essay at the moment, and it includes the Dunne family in the area c1900.Title book of the (Management Of The Digby Estate ,King's County,1857-71 by Mary Delaney). You can secure a copy from Offaly History Centre online. Please secure a copy of this book as it will give YOU a good idea of the conditions and people where John ,Mary and many from the area left for NSW at that time.Indeed if anyone else is reserching the Offaly (King's Co) who migrated to Australia between 1860-1900 interested in getting a copy of the book as they can CROSS REFERENCE the family names on the ships PASSANGER LIST'S to the names mentioned in this title as well as online.I believe there was about 150 family members from this area on the 1865 Erin Go Bragh crossing. It does not surprise me that Mary married a Seery! as this is also a local name to her parish.
I do not support the idea of DNA tracing as it gets in the way of real reserch and the storys of our ancestry.
kind regards

Hi Theo, the Book on the Digby estate arrived and I have flicked through it. Imagine my surprise to see Joseph Mulpeter's house among the illustrations. There were two men named Joseph Mulpeter, one at Philipstown and the other on the estate. I assume that the illustrations are of my Joseph Mulpeter because of evidence in the Baptismal register at Rahan and the residence listed on the civil birth registrations. Thank you for suggesting the book.
Mary Mulpeter was living with the Galvin's at the time of her death. Bridget, one of her younger daughters was the informant. That would be the same address as on the 1911 Cenus.
I will get back to you when I have read the book. Thanks again. Pat

Well done Pat for getting the book, it is a real insight into what was going on with your ancestory at that period 1880's to the mid 1920's. There are other publications availble to help you with further research.
Your GG Grandfather (John) is mentioned in the book also.HE was the one that got rid of Trench and his son in the end!
Not sure if it was Bridget that was the imforment? I taught it was O'Shea from Co.Kerry.
I must buy a copy myself!
Kind regards
Theo

Hello Pat,
It is a little complicated Pat and you need to do a little reserch on the areas and townlands to understand the movements of your ancestory.
I would recommend you read the WST book and get to know it well, as it is realy about YOUR ancestory. Also for reading is Dr.Jennifer Harrison essay (Fr Patrick Dunne Eastern Australia) a very good account and well reserched.
PM me helion(at)hotmail(dot)com and I will send you in the right direction.
Kind regards

I will start by getting my email correct first!

The pepole you are referring to were all nationalists and land leaguers.About one third of the overall land leagures were cathloic priests. Some were relatives to your ancestory from 1880-1925 at lest three of the Dunnes. Mary Mulpeter Dunne, I beleve was a member of the cumann na bhan.
John Helion b.1853 was a member of the Ribbonmen. Can you supplie me with a reference to the (informent) please.
