My name is Anne Marie and I am the parish liason for Churchtown, unfortunately the records for Churchtown do not start till after 1800, the earliest records are between 1805 and 1820

I have checked the Peter Robinson settlers list but can not find any James Buckley in the 1823 ships manifest, both the Hebe and the Stakesby sailed in 1823, do you know when they arrived?

James should be on the list for The Hebe in 1823 and grouped with Daniel, Mary (listed as wife) and Ellen (some listings show Hellen).

In the book by Carol Bennett on Robinson settlers, it says though James' origin is listed as Churchtown, "other documents say that his birthplace was Mallow, Cork." I have not seen any other such documents myself.

Timothy O'Brien and Catherine Leary had a daughter Ellen, born in Canada and died in 1844.  She was a godparent to John McAuliffe, born in Ramsay in 1841, son of John McAuliffe and Margaret Fitzgerald.  John McAuliffe and Margaret Fitzgerald were married in New Market in 1838.  They went to Ramsay, Ontario, Canada in 1840.   John McAuliffe died shortly before 1861 and on the 1861 census Margaret was living with widow Mary Sheehan. Her deceased husband was James.   I suspect John Sheehan who  married Mary McAuliffe in Buttevant may have been related to James Sheehan.  Dorothy Payne  dcpayne@shaw.ca

Dorothy, I just saw your reply. I do recognize some of these names, as well as locations. When my family emigrated to Canada, these surnames are prevalent in many marriages. Because of them all being so close knit, I had long believed they were connected when they still lived in Ireland.
