Hello.
My name is John McCaffery, I am the great grandson of James McCaffrey born 1854, died in 1904 while working at a mill in Dungannon. It was the16th December and I know an inquest was held in Tyrone on 20th December. His widow, my great grandmother, Ellen Graham, subsequenty recieved over £50 in compensation and she took the entire family to Scotland where some were able to work at Plean colliery if they were old enough. In an effort to learn more about James I want to find out if there is a surviving record of the Coroners Inquest. I hope this may have more information about James because I have been unable to pin down his birth, parentage or a record of his marriage. He is believed to be from Fermanagh.
I would be very grateful to anyone who can point me in the right direction. Thank you.

A listing for a James and Ellen McCaffrey in the 1901 Irish census follows. Could they be your ancestors?
Note that Ellen is said to be 32 but the oldest child is 18. Either she was older or James was married twice.Residents of a house 38 in Drumcoo (Derrygortrevy, Tyrone)

This is the death certificate for James who died aged 50 years in Scutch Mill from shock and cardiac failure following an accident. John Malone was the coroner in Co. Tyrone at the time and submitted the information.

The inquest may have survived, and if so, it will be in PRONI in Belfast. (Thye will copy it for a fee). Search the PRONI e-catalogue using "inquest" and the surname.
You could also try the British Newspaprs Archive site. If the inquest was reported you may get a detailed description there. Sometimes with a little more graphic detai on the injuries than you would read today.

Tyrone Constitution of 23rd December 1904 reports the inquest. James McCaffrey 50 was injured when working as a foreman scutcher in Mr Hadden’s Mill at Mullaghmore Glebe. He was taken to the workhouse hospital where he died from cardiac failure of the heart, caused by shock and loss of blood sustained through injuries accidentally received by coming in contact with the machinery in the mill. The jury said: “We thoroughly agree with Dr Morrison as to the desirability of steps being taken to instruct some persons in all mills and factories how to render first aid in cases of injuries to the person and we desire to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy with the widow and family of deceased in their sudden bereavement.”
