Hello. :) This may be a long shot, but I'm hoping someone out there might be able to help me find out more about these ancestors.

My 3rd-great-grandfather was William J. Brady of Cavan (born 1829, immigrated to the US in 1851.) He was involved in the Lincoln County War in New Mexico, and became a fairly well-known and well-documented individual following his death as a result. Thanks to research by the biographer Donald Lavash, I know that William's parents were John Brady and Catherine Darby of Annagelliff. They were married Nov. 8, 1828, and had eight children, from oldest to youngest: William, Philip, Mary, Patrick, Catherine, John, Ellen, and Peter.

Through independent research, I believe that I have been able to identify John's parents as Phill Brady (b. 1766) and Ellinor (maiden name unknown, b. 1771.) Source: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QV9S-5T45.

Based upon the fact that John and Catherine had two children named after themselves and two ostensibly named after John's parents, my guess is that Catherine's mother might have been named Mary and her father perhaps William or Patrick. However, I have found nothing to confirm or deny these speculations - I have not been able to find any records pertaining to the Darby family at all.

Last but not least, it appears that William's younger sister Catherine Brady married a William McCafferty and lived in Boston, MA by the time of her death in 1903. Source: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NWF4-NM9.

Thank you.

The records for the RC parish of Cavan/Urney/Annageliffe start in July 1812  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0814  so if the Bradys and Darbys were from that parish, a baptismal record for William and Catherine will not be available.

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and there were no Catherine Darby baptismal records in any parish in Co. Cavan around 1805-1810 or even earlier. There were no John Brady baptismal records with father Philip anywhere in Cavan in the same time period.

Sorry, I could not be more helpful.

  • In Griffiths Valuation of Cavan in 1857, the following individuals were living in Annageliff. The place name before “Annageliff” below is the townland.

  • Thank you, Roger and Patricia!

Roger, thank you for that information. I wonder if the Darby family were not originally from Cavan, but perhaps from a neighboring county.

Patricia, I would imagine that this Philip Brady was my great-grandfather's brother, who took over as head of the family after William left for America!

    Kind regards,

    Morgan

There were six Darby records in the Griffiths Valuation head of household listing including three in Annageliff civil parish. Neighboring counties like Monaghan, Louth and Meath also had Darby families.
