I am looking for any help possible to trace my great-great grandfather John Carew who cam from Waterford and left at the age of 21 to be stationed in Ballyfarnon as an RIC Officer in 1847 therefore his birth year may have been around 1826. He married there, had children and the rest is history! I have no name for his father or mother so very difficult to go back further but I have looked up the Griffith Valuations and there were a John Carew and A Thomas (also name of his eldest son) in Ringagonagh John in Mweelahorna and Thomas is Gortnadiha. Any clues as to how to get clearer or any newspaper clippings or documents of any description that would be of help.. Gratefully yours, orla Carew/Sligo

Your search is complicated by the fact that we don't know for sure if the father of John Carew was living in 1850 and leasing land when the Griffiths survey was conducted. There are 23 Carew records in the Griffiths for the entire county but it appears there are many duplicates and the number of unique individuals was likely around 10-12 and about half are in Ringagonagh civil parish.
Looking at the subscription site Roots Ireland there are nine John Carew baptismal records in Co. Waterford from 1821-1827 but none in 1826.
The RC parish for Ringagonagh civil parish would be Ring and of the nine records I mentioned, only one was in Ring RC parish.
John Carew baptized May 5 1822 father James Carew and mother Joanna Savage. The family lived in Helvick townland and when you go back to the Griffiths, there is a James Carew in Helvick (actually two records indicating he had two separate parcels of land).
Is it possible that John Carew adjusted his age in order to be 21 rather than 25?
Let me know what you think about this possibility.

Hello Roger,
Thank you for all that! that is super detective work! Wow!! You are right, it is complicated and there is more! On his RIC service record it states he married in 1861 but on the RC church records it states 1859. And sons born 1860 & '62. I looked up Thomas Carew's in Griffith Valuations/Waterford too as Thomas was the name of his eldest son and I saw one in Gortnadiha but as I haven't subscribed to Roots Ireland I couldn't see anything more.
I don't know how we can be sure!! Thanks again.
Orla.
