I am searching for any information, hints, clues or ideas on my 2x greatgrandfather John Juan Callinan. He has been elusive when searching for his origins and I would love to find out anything of his Irish family history.
I know a few things about his life here in Australia but nothing really about his life in Ireland or his parents and their occupation etc. One thing I thought should be a clue is that he seemed to be proud to use his full name of John Juan which whispers links to Spain or Portugal? His grave stone even includes the Juan name b
This is what I know or think I know about John:
John Juan Callinan was born about 1844, in Kilshanny. I know this from his arrival documents in Australia not from birth registers. I think his parents were Jeremiah (or Darby) and Mary Ellen ?
John emigrated likely onboard the Peerless in 1865 arriving in Sydney, NSW Australia in 1866 at age 22. He was Catholic and he could both read and write so he received an education.
He may have had a younger brother Patrick who also emigrated to Sydney Nsw 4 years later.
As an aside he became a successful store owner in a town called Moree owning the store, house and also land. This hints that his father may have also run a store or business in or near Kilshanny.
I looked up land records and found a Jeremiah Callinan leasing a house, land and offices from the Blood family. This may be John's father. If so what did he do and exactly where did he live?
This is fully guess work from the very little I have found out about him and would be absolutely thrilled to find out more...especially any hint on this use of his middle name Juan.

You might also want to check out the National Library of Ireland Catholic Parish Registers which are available online at the following link: https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0630. You will note that that link is for Lisdoonvarna which is a neighboring parish of Kilshanny, Unfortunately, those registers are not available online.
You may also find the Clare Library website helpful for research. You can access their online catalogue through this link: http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/genealog.htm.

You mentioned a Darby and a Jeremiah in your previous post. It should be noted that Darby was a nickname for Jeremiah, so your comment about finding some land being occupied by a Jeremiah may well be a family member to your John Juan Callinan. I have contacted our local volunteer so I should hopefully have some information for you in the next week or two.

I have heard back from our local volunteer about this family. I quote below:
There were 3 Callinan families in the parish at one time. There are no longer any Callinans there now.
One family branch is living elsewhere and I have more information which I can share with you if you write to me directly at: jhalloranryan@irelandxo.com.
Another family has died out as they never married and hadn't any children.
There was a John Callinan family living in Ballytarsna townland in Griffith's Valuation. Was this the family that you might have been referring to?
