Greetings,

I am looking for help in determining a name in the Clogheen RC Parish Reccords.

I am looking for Michael Keeffe, b.8 Aug 1868 in townland also Clogheen.  I can't read the forename on the record of the child of Patrick Keeffe and Mary Mryan, born on the above date?

Would appreciate any help.

Thanks in advance,

John O'Keefe

  • The civil birth is a little easier to read - 9th August 1868, child's name Michael, father's occupation Policeman - other details match the baptism which I read as born 9th baptised 12th.

  • John,

I have attached a file that I think  lists the children of Patrick Keeffe and Mary from 1865 to 1873  all born in Clogheen. The Civil  regristration was made compulsary from 865 so you have some bBaptismal records and some Civil Birth records.

I am originally from Cahir which is just down the road from Clogheen .If you require any clarification I may be able to assist.

  • Hello Thomas,

What a wonderful response and thank you kindly for the detailed information on the Keefe family of Clogheen.  I will save both hard and electronic copies for my records.

My 2-Great Grandparents, John O’Keeffe, and Bridget Costigan were married at Cahir Parish 9 Feb 1834, and later that same year gave birth to their first child Jude at Coolmoyne, some distance away.  I have found six birth records at Fethard Parish for their children. Unfortunately, I don’t have birth years or parent names for either John or Bridget.  (Passenger lists, U.S. Census records, and Gravestone records are all different)

This family immigrated to the U.S. in 1851 after losing three children in The Famine.- two in Coolmoyne, and one at sea.

I’ve been collecting information from the Cahir area on all Costigan’s, but have had little luck with the Keeffe/O’Keeffe surname there.  Your Clogheen information is a very good start.  I will try to narrow down the families with hopes of linking John and Bridget to their respective families in Cahir Parish, or other nearby parish.

Thanks again for helping me, and all the other researchers you’ve been kind enough to assist.  I was excited when I saw your name, and it jumped out at me as one who has shown similar kindness to many other researchers in the past.

    Regards,

  • j0hn,

I have attached a note on the issues associated with the various data sets (records) relating to Caher. Some of the isues are common to other parishes in South Tipperary  but most are unique to Caher. I have also attached some Keeffe family births and land records from Caher, without linking them directly to your post. When you have a brows over the records and if you can associate any of them with your ancestors I may be able further your search.

    Keep digging

  • Thank you Thomas,

Very kind to attach the records.  Interesting that Powerstown Parish is two of the records you've attached.  I've searched the parish in the past

for the Costigan surname,  and did come up with a couple of names that I wasn't able to link to my Bridget Costigan (m.1834 at Cahir Parish).

I think it's time to give Powerstown another try, and perhaps build some Costigan families there? Time for me to re-subscribe to RootsIreland.ie?

I appreciate all of your help Thomas.
