Hello,

I have attached 2 records of death. One for my 2nd great-grandfather who died in 1901 and one for my 2nd great-uncle James Keenan who died in 1931. They would of attended a Roman Catholic Church. Can you please tell me where they might have been buried and the name and location of the chuch they would have attended?

Thank you for your help,

Marybeth Cuffe Luttenberger

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The church would be the Church of the Holy Family in Tubber. The parish is part of the Diocese of Meath.

FYI. The death record info was too small to read so I looked up the James Keenan record. Here is his 1911 census record  http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Westmeath/Kilcumreragh/Ballintober/878065/

  • Hi Roger,

Thank you for your reply and for taking the time to look James up in the census.  I have located on Google Maps, a Holy Family Church in Tober, County Offlay not too far from the Westmeath County line.  Would this be the church?  I did not see a cemetery located at the church.  Do you know where my James could have been buried since there is no cemetery located at the church?

The map on Irelands National Inventory of Architecturial Heritage website http://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=OF&regno=14902003# has the chuch labeled as St. Mary's Church when you zoom in on the site http://webgis.buildingsofireland.ie/HistoricEnvironment/?REG_NO=14902003.  Would the church have been called St. Mary's at one time?

Thank you again for all of your help.

  • Mary Beth:

I saw the record you provided with St. Mary's annotated. I'm thinking that is a mistake. If you Google, church of ireland Tubber Co. Offaly, you will see that St. Mary's was the Church of Ireland parish in the area west of Holy Family. Not sure if it is still active.

Below are some small items but I think the name of the cemetery that you want is Kilcurley cemetery in Offaly. The first item is the e-mail for th RC parish priest. He may or may not respond. I then found an obit of someone who died three years ago and she was buried in Kilcurley cemetery. Finally there is a link to the Find a Grave site for Kilcurley. Just a few burials documented

  • Tomas,

Wow! This is a gift!  Thank you so very much for your kindness in sending this photo along to me.  This James Keenan would be my great-uncle, brother to my great-grandmother Kate Keenan Cuffe.  Kate and my great-grandfather, Patrick Cuffe married prior to immigrating to New York sometime in 1882.  Can you tell me, based on the information in the attached civil record of their marriage, if they married in this same church?

I’ve also attached a copy of my g-g-grandfather’s record of death and based on that, do you think he could also be buried in this cemetery?

I hope you and yours are all safe and healthy and thank you again for your kindness.

  • Hi Marybeth,
I would say not, they married in Tubber church, in Co. Offaly, where I was baptised and confirmed myself.  There are two parish churches, one is Tubber (or Kilmanaghan) and the other is Rosemount (or Kilcumreragh).

James 1901 may well be buried in the same churchyard, even within this same grave, but there is no grave marker for him.  He may also have been buried in an older nearby burial ground named Kill, about half a mile away, with few graves marked.

Here is a link that may be of interest to you, its a collection in our state archives of essays etc written by schoolkids back 80 or 90 years ago, make sure to read the remarks in the side margin.

By coincidence, on your death cert of James Keenan 1901, the entry preceding him is Peter Adamson, a first cousin of my grandmother Julia Adamson.

Here is a google maps link to the Keenan household as it stands today, if the link does not work, I have attached a screenshot photo of it, and another family linked Coolahan gravestone, I actually knew Posy Coolahan very well, and her son Bill who lived and has since died in the USA.

Hope this a help to you.

  • Hi Tomas,

The photo of the Keenan household is wonderful beyond words. I have just shared it, along with the Google Maps link, with the rest of my family and they are sure to be equally thrilled with it.  Thank you!

Is the Tubber Church, the Church of the Holy Family and the one in Rosemount St. Thomas where James 1931 is buried?  Also, would the older Kill burial ground be owned by the Diocese of Meath?

The link you sent,  https://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes/5009071/4983728%C2%A0 did not work for me but I was able to get into, https://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes.  Once I’m in this site, which of the schools should I check out?  This looks to be a great website that I will be taking time to check out.  Thanks for sending it along to me.

Yes, quite the coincidence about your grandmother’s first cousin showing up on the same record with my James 1901.  I suppose, like here at times, Ireland can be a small world where you find connections where you never expect to find them.

Thank you, Thomas for your time and kindness.

  • P.S.  Thomas, I played around on the duchas.ie site and found the storyies by Mrs. Keenan.  They are terrific and I wonder which Mrs. Keenan she would be.  Thanks again.
