Hi Roger,

Thank you for your reply and for taking the time to look James up in the census.  I have located on Google Maps, a Holy Family Church in Tober, County Offlay not too far from the Westmeath County line.  Would this be the church?  I did not see a cemetery located at the church.  Do you know where my James could have been buried since there is no cemetery located at the church?

The map on Irelands National Inventory of Architecturial Heritage website http://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=OF&regno=14902003# has the chuch labeled as St. Mary's Church when you zoom in on the site http://webgis.buildingsofireland.ie/HistoricEnvironment/?REG_NO=14902003.  Would the church have been called St. Mary's at one time?

I saw the record you provided with St. Mary's annotated. I'm thinking that is a mistake. If you Google, church of ireland Tubber Co. Offaly, you will see that St. Mary's was the Church of Ireland parish in the area west of Holy Family. Not sure if it is still active.

Below are some small items but I think the name of the cemetery that you want is Kilcurley cemetery in Offaly. The first item is the e-mail for th RC parish priest. He may or may not respond. I then found an obit of someone who died three years ago and she was buried in Kilcurley cemetery. Finally there is a link to the Find a Grave site for Kilcurley. Just a few burials documented

The death has occurred of Elizabeth (Liz) DOOLAN (née Murray)
Tinnamuck, Moate, Offaly / Moate, Westmeath

Liz died peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on January 14th 2016. She is predeceased by her beloved husband Joe. Liz will be sadly missed by her loving family, Margaret (Maloney), Pat, Mary and Michael, grandchildren Ciara, Aoife, Grace, Ella, Hannah, Katie, Eoin and Ciarán, brothers James and Michael, sons-in-law Sean and Jim, daughter-in-law Margaret, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

Reposing at her daughter Mary's home in Cloughatanny on Friday from 4pm to 8pm and on Saturday from 4pm to 8pm. Removal afterwards arriving at the Church of the Holy Family, Tubber on Saturday night at 9pm. Requiem Mass on Sunday at 12 noon. Interment afterwards in Kilcurley Cemetery.

Wow! This is a gift!  Thank you so very much for your kindness in sending this photo along to me.  This James Keenan would be my great-uncle, brother to my great-grandmother Kate Keenan Cuffe.  Kate and my great-grandfather, Patrick Cuffe married prior to immigrating to New York sometime in 1882.  Can you tell me, based on the information in the attached civil record of their marriage, if they married in this same church?

I’ve also attached a copy of my g-g-grandfather’s record of death and based on that, do you think he could also be buried in this cemetery?

I would say not, they married in Tubber church, in Co. Offaly, where I was baptised and confirmed myself.  There are two parish churches, one is Tubber (or Kilmanaghan) and the other is Rosemount (or Kilcumreragh).

James 1901 may well be buried in the same churchyard, even within this same grave, but there is no grave marker for him.  He may also have been buried in an older nearby burial ground named Kill, about half a mile away, with few graves marked.

By coincidence, on your death cert of James Keenan 1901, the entry preceding him is Peter Adamson, a first cousin of my grandmother Julia Adamson.

Is the Tubber Church, the Church of the Holy Family and the one in Rosemount St. Thomas where James 1931 is buried?  Also, would the older Kill burial ground be owned by the Diocese of Meath?

Yes, quite the coincidence about your grandmother’s first cousin showing up on the same record with my James 1901.  I suppose, like here at times, Ireland can be a small world where you find connections where you never expect to find them.
