I am trying to trace my Kelly family consisting of Timothy & Mary Kelly and their 3 sons - Thomas born about 1834, Michael born 1836, Timothy 1843 and one daughter Winnifred born about 1847.  They emigrated to South Australia in 1857 on board the Navarino as assisted passengers sponsored by FH Dutton of Anlaby Station, Kapunda SA. The Kellys sponsored their maid Mary Daly. The only information available is the Passenger List which indicates Co. Clare as county of origin.  The obituary for their son Michael in 1917, indicates that the family came from Ballyvaughan.  I cannot find the birth or baptism records for any of the children and no true indication of  Timothy Snr birth.  I have been trying to find the marriage record for Timothy and Mary especially to determine her maiden name.  There is a possibility that they were married in 1830 in Killard Parish with Mary's name being O'Dea. I cannot find any trace of them in the Ballyvaughan area in Townlands from about 1830 to their departure in 1857. I have a DNA match to Fitzgeralds in Co. Clare but the match is too distant to determine where it might fit. Timothy & Mary were documented as 43 and 40 respectively on the passenger list, but this doesn't correlate with their death certificates some years later in Manoora, South Australia. Timothy's death certificate shows he was 85 on death in 1885, Mary is shown as being 82 in 1884 if this is corret, she would have been 55 and Timothy 57 when emigrating, a not unusal thing to do to meet emigration age requirements.  This would mean Mary was an older mother, so did they marry earlier and were there other children as there are large year gaps between the younger two children probably due to young baby deaths perhaps. So many questions but would like any help that can pinpoint when and where they married and even the children's baptisms and where they lived. The entire family remained in South Australia with Michael in particular having a large family who settled in the Clare Valley area of South Australia. Many thanks  Sue Lear (nee Kelly).

If your family was from the Ballyvaughan area likely no baptismal or marriage records would be available since the records for that parish start in 1856.

We don't know if your Timothy Kelly was leasing land before he emigrated to South Australia. The 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Co. Clare lists 18 Timothy Kelly records. I looked at the civil parishes and there is a Timothy Kelly in Murrooghtoohy South townland in Gleninagh civil parish which is in the Ballyvaughan RC church area. Possible lead.

The Co. Clare library is a great resource for genealogy research https://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/genealog.htm

  • Hi Sue and team at Ireland XO

I am a Kelly, born in Australia, but in WA .

Ireland XO, you are always our first go to for information and I hope that my comment in reply to Sue is not considered rule breaking.  For many of us we have hit a brick wall, so definitely collaborate to support each other.  Please always reach out to us Aussies for finding families too, the support does go both ways.  We have the luxury of local knowledge and geographical knowledge here, we feel pretty lost searching in Ireland, so if there are questions about Australia, please reach out too.

    Sue

I know there is a blog created by a West Australian woman, who has put in incredible research, they have very strong ties to Kapunda, her family are from there.  It is the Hooper Boyland blog.  There were four merchant families from Ireland who left Ireland at the same time, they had two different Kelly families - one from Tuam Galway and one from Clare, TIMOTHY is mentioned on there but there is no information for him - so I am guessing he did come out but not join in with the closeness of the entire family.  BUT the area does tie in with your comment too, they mention Clare, but specifically an area called Cappanakilla in the parish of Ruan Dysart."Cappanakilla is an anglicisation of the Irish name of Ceapach na Ceallaigh. This would have a literal translation of ‘the tillage lands of the Kellys’, which would imply that the Kellys had been farming the townland of Cappanakilla for a long time"

The CLARE JOURNAL Newspaper does mention (in the Ennis version) that the Kelly family came to SA in 1850, so your Timothy does seem to come later.  Understandable, Mrs may have needed a little time to commit to moving across the other side of the world where the summer is hotter than hell and everything is differerent..

I also am wondering if the Michael Kelly you mention as being born in 1836 has a son/grandson called Eugene Kelly, who served in WW1.  IF he is, then I would love to chat.  Eugene Kelly was a Sapper in the 3rd Australian Tunnelling Company, he was Sapper 1057, but what I liked is my great uncle Michael Kelly, from western Australia was Sapper 1056.  They knew each other and trained at Blackboy Hill training camp here in WA.    I am trying to find Eugene's family to share that 'exciting' news, but also to let them know that the 3rd Australian Tunnelling Company is having plaques erected in France.  It is a beautiful gesture from our French brothers who are trying to ensure our boys were remembered because it was our boys who kept them safe.  We have good people all over the world.

So... Hooper Boyland Blog.    Join Clan Kelly on fb.   please message me so we can connect over social media too if that is okay or email.

IF your Timothy Kelly has a grandson or great grandson from Manoora South Australia Eugene Kelly,  have some photographs I would love to share, (they are in the  public domain but not sure if you know about them.)  On Eugene's army paperwork he says his father is MICHAEL KELLY and mentions BOOBOOWICK SA - literally NO idea where that is in SA. But fingers crossed you see this, read this and know we are looking for your Timothy, so please come and join us.

Kind regards from another Kelly xxxx

  • Hi Ada

Thanks for your message. It does seem as though we are related.  I have done both FTDNA and more recently Ancestry DNA so if you have done either of those we can definitely confirm. I have also uploaded to GEDmatch Kit: T443934.

Timothy KELLY Snr middle son Michael KELLY and his wife Elizabeth MURPHY had 12 children (11 boys and one girl). They farmed at Booborowie which is in the Clare SA area. Their children were: Timothy (1865 - 1924); Michael (Mickey 1866 - 1937) neither married, they farmed together and raised horses; William Thomas (1867 - 1952); John married but died of meningitis (1870 - 1902); Eugene Patrick (1872 - 1918) died at or near Erquingham, East of Armentieres, France. He was Sapper 1057 and has as yet no grave but the latest information is that he may have been buried in a mass grave near to the Belgium/French border. AWM have sought DNA from several of the great nephews. He is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux WW1 Memorial 3rd Tunneling Co. We have some images and copies of several postcards Eugene sent from France to his family. There is a project to uncover and shore up the tunnels where the 3rd Tunneling Co. were operating. This is a joint British/French undertaking but was interrupted like so much else by Covid 19 some 3 or 4 years ago. The panels to commemorate the tunnellers is part of this project which is wonderful.

The rest of Michael & Elizabeth's family were: Joseph 1874 - 1950; Austin Ambrose 1877 - 1958; Stephen 1879 - 1958; Dorothy 1881 - 1978 (she married James HOGAN); James 1883 - 1959; Dennis Ignatius 1885 - 1950; Francis 1888 - 1917 (Trooper No. 2462, 3rd Light Horse and was killed o31 Oct 1917 in the Charge of the Light Brigade at Bethsheba and is buried in Palestine). Four sons went to WW1 and two returned - James A.I.B.D. No. 3268 (his son Michael Jospeh Kelly was killed in PNG in 1943) and Dennis No. 709 43rd Battn.

Hope all of this helps to provide some links. Will go to Facebook also, I am a member of Clan Kelly, just haven't checked postings lately. Thanks for the information about the Hooper Boyland Blog - will check it out. :)

I am in South Australia and in contact with some of Michael's family.  My great grandfather was Michael's youngest brother Timothy who had 4 sons (2 survived) all born in the Manoora/Booborowie/Clare area.

    Cheers
