Visiting next month, and seeking information about George Gunn (b~1803) and Jane McGarry (or Garry, b~1809), their ancestors/siblings/etc.

Here's what I know (or think I know):

  • I have a marriage record that appears to be theirs (an unfortunate crease), June 1837 in Ballina.  Catholic Church, but George might have been Protestant (if I read this correctly)
  • 2 children born/baptized in Ireland: Anna (1839) and John (1840).  The next child was born in Canada in 1842, implying an emigration between 1840 and 1842.
  • US records note George birth in Clare, birth dates and parents for Anna and John match from the US to their baptismal records.
  • Although McGarry does not seem to be a rare name, Gunn appears to be unusual for Ireland

And here's what I'm interested in:

  • More information on any of the above family members (documentation, ancestors, siblings, descendants, etc.)

  • Any physical sites relating to them (houses, grave sites, etc.)

    Tithe Records for Co. Clare show a George Gunn in Kilrush area of West Clare in 1827.

    Griffith's valuations c1850 show a number with the surname Gunn in East Clare.

    The surname Gunn appears in the parish of Ogonnello, East Clare. 1901 Irish Census has a record of John Gunn, aged 50 years.

    He is recorded as Church of Ireland and a caretaker living alone.

    Anne Gunn a servant in Rosslevan (Ennis Suburbs) also Church of Ireland.

  • Hello McCoy, and thank you for responding to my query!  Here's my thoughts on what you provided:

    • George Gunn marriage to (Jane) Anne McGarry: I had located these records previously and I do view them as conclusive.  Thanks for confirming!
    • George Gunn in Kilrush: I have seen that, but had ignored given the great distance from Kilrush to Killaloe.  Do you have a sense on how typical it might have been for someone in that time and place to uproot themselves ~100 km to move to an entirely different type of place?
    • All records subsequent to 1842: The Gunn family emigrated to Canada sometime between 1840 to 1842.  Although it is possible that these records might include someone related to George Gunn, without any additional documentation linking them by birth, I need to ignore them at this point.

    I attach a record of the Baptism of a Catherine Gunn in Killaloe in 1832. Her father is recorded as George Gunn - 64th Regt.  Her mother - Bridget Smyth.

    No record of a marriage found. Could this George Gunn be the person concerned?

    In relation to children baptised in 1839 - Anne and Mary and John 1840. They would appear to have been twins? - Baptismal Sponsor: Anne Moloney.

    The record is shown at 1108 on original Killaloe parish baptisms.
