My great, great grandfather, Dennis Madden emmigrated to United States in 1852. He landed in New York City and eventually settled in South Weymouth, Massachusetts. My research shows that he was born in Ballyvaughan, County Clare about 1834 to John and Bridget (Conroy) Madden. I have found one brother, Colman, who also emmigrated to the US, ending up in Boston.

Griffiths Valuation does show "John Madden" in Ballyvaughan. I haven't found any other siblings and I dont know if John and his wife stayed in Ireland or also emmigrated to the US.

Dennis married Margaret Ryan in South Weymouth in 1856. Margaret, I believe, was from Feaghquin, County Clare. I'm not sure when she came to the US.

I'll be visiting Ireland this March and April, 2019 and plan to spend some time in County Clare. If anyone may have some information of my descendents, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks, Kevin Madden

  • Dear Kevin:

Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board.  As you appear to have ancestral connections to both Ballyvaughan and to Quin parishes, you should definitely take a look at the Clare Library website.  This website has a number of transcriptions of documents including parish registers which you may find very useful.  The Quin registers are online there and I note that there is a familly of Connor/Cornelius Ryan and Mary Kett who resided in Feighquin pre-famine.  In addition, the parish registers are online through the National Library of Ireland, and they can be viewed for free.  As you will be traveling to Clare, you should definitely stop into the Local Studies Centre in Ennis which is the county-wide repository for local historical and genealogical information in County Clare.  This building is located next to the DeValera Library.  Please keep me posted as to your travel plans, and if I'm available, I can meet you.  I have some Quin connections myself and know of several individuals who may be able to assist.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.
