My Great Grandmother was Margaret McMahon, born in November 1856 in Bodyke Clare. I'm trying to verify this and find out who her parents were. She immigrated to the United States and married my Great Grandfather, Patrick Donnelly Winter (also from Ireland) in 1877 in San Francisco. They had 7 children together and she died in San Francisco in 1906.

Any help in conferming that she was from Bodyke Clare and who her parents were would be to great help.

Thank you.

  • Dear Sarah:

Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site.

The Kilnoe (Bodyke) parish registers are available online through the National Library of Ireland.  They are free to view and you might note the link below for your research:

The parish registers begain in 1832 so your ancestor's record should be there.  I have checked this for you and can confirm the following:

There are 2 Margaret McMahons listed in the register.

Margaret McMahon baptised 4 October 1854 parents:  Martin McMahon and H. Connell.  Sponsor was Biddy Mannix.  Residence was Caherhurley.

Margaret McMahon baptised 8 June 1874.  Parents:  Tom McMahon and Mary Crotty.  Sponsors were:  Matt McMahon and Mary Crotty.  Residence was Tuamgraney.

The first Margaret McMahon would appear to be more likely.  These registers are very clear and easy to read and should be looked at further for information.

If you need further assistance, please let me know.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.

  • Thank you so much Jane! This is very exciting indeed. I think you're right the first one looks like it may be a match.

My Mother told me that she caught my Grandmother burning the family Bible after my Grandfather died so all those names and connections were lost.

    Happy Samhain!
