Hello,
My great-great-grandmother, Mary Martin, was born in Caheragh (baptised 19 March 1843) to Daniel Martin and his wife Eleanor (Ellen) Sweeney of Abbeystrowry. I know they had 9 other children (many of which I've traced), and had addresses in multiple townlands in Caheragh over the years, including Maune, Cloghane Beg and Cooragannive. I also know that Eleanor is the daughter of David Sweeney and Mary Driscoll, was baptised on the 24 Jul 1808 and died in Aghadown on the 4 Mar 1871.
However, Daniel remains a bit of a mystery. His eldest son is Timothy (b. 29 Jan 1826), so it's likely that his father was a Timothy, but I am unable to ascertain this - mainly because he was likely born prior to the earliest available records. I know that there are a few Martin families in the region (and in Boleagh) up until the early 20th century, but I'm not sure how these tie into mine. I wonder if anybody else has come across the Martins of Caheragh?
Thanks,
Irene

Hi Irene,
Despite assurances from Castlemore Roscommon above, nobody contacted me about your queries on the Martin families of Cahertagh.I hope what follows is of some help to you. Please acknowledge receipt.
Daniel & Ellen were married in Skibbereen Parish Church on 15 Feb 1825
They had the following children that I know of. The dates of course are all baptismal dates. I must say however that the Tim Martin of 29 Jan 1826 may be incorrect as the Baptismal record gives the surname of the mother as Sullivan but this is probably an error on the part of the clergyman writing it up and this happenened frequently at the time.
Tim 29 Jun 1826
James 12 Aug 1827
Margaret 23 Feb 1830
Cornelius 28 Mar 1830
Catherine 03 May1835
Jeremiah 24 Jul 1837
Eleanor 27 Dec 1840
Mary 19 Mar 1843
John 16 Jun 1845
One thing that may be of assistance to you in the course of your searches is to spell the name Caheragh in irishgenealogy.ie as Caharagh.

Frank:
I went back and checked my sent messages from last year and maybe the issue was not having your correct e-mail address. My message was sent to frankfahy54@gmail.com I looked at our file of current volunteers and I see that your e-mail address is slightly different from what I used in April 2021. I don't remember receiving an error message. In any event, going forward I have the correct address. All the best!
