Hello Sarah
Welcome to the IrelandXO Ennistymon Community!
Q: Can you tell me where you got the "Ennistymon" place of origin from? Was it a ship's manifest (wider catchment area) or a church certificate (local parish)?
The town of Ennistymon differs from Ennistymon Electoral Division and more than one parish would give Ennistymon as its nearest PO address. As you can see, from the Neylons buried at Ennistymon Old Cemetery, the catchment spread far and beyond, as families migrated (they returned to the original parish burial grounds).
Handy links to help identify Neylon townlands in and around Ennistymon...
1855 Neylons in Griffiths Valuation [Kilmanaheen parish: ATTYCRISTORA, CLOONAVEIGE, WOODMOUNT; Kilshanny Parish: BALLYMACRAVAN, CAHERYCOOSAUN, KNOCKNASKEAGH; Clooney Parish ARDMORE; Kilfarboy Parish: BREAFFY SOUTH]
1820s Neylons in Tithe Applotment Records [Drumcliff & Kilmaley just west of Ennis were Neylon strongholds]
To get the best response for Ennistymon, you should also join and post your ancestors to the civil parishes of Kilmanaheen, Kilshanny, Kilfarboy and Clooney (Corcomroe) ... and perhaps all the civil parishes in north-west Clare.
So, we are looking for a James and a Hanora (Honor / Norah/ Nonie) Neylon/ Neylan / Nealon ...
Unfortunately only church baptism & marriage records for Jan 15 1870 - Sept 8 1880 are currently accessible online. (clare.rootsireland.ie/ has no records for this couple). To access earlier parish records 1823-1900, local help is a must. (A database of 19th century Baptisms is held at www.clareroots.com).
Q: Do you have any more information about siblings? If Mary was one of their first children, there is still hope of tracing extended family.
Q: Was there any mention of Mary's parents being deceased when she emigrated?
If there was a possibility that either parent lived on into old age, we can start by looking at end-of life leads ...
Handy links to help narrow down your search by elimination..
SEARCH 1 Death records (from 1865) Civil Registration District Ennistyon (although, if died in hospital the registration may be found beyond Ennistymon in another town.
failing that ...
SEARCH 2 search the 1901 Census for an older Norah / Hanoria / Honor or James Neylon
e.g. X Norah & son James at Druminshin (Ennistymon Union, but nearer to Corofin) is too far away. This Norah was the widow of John Neylon, farmer.
*pick through each result like this, using townlands.ie to map locations*
SEARCH 3 For Neylons close enough to Ennistymon, follow up BMD search for "James" or Nora's "youngest child" to confirm spouse /parentage)
e.g. X Honor Neylon (nee Callinan + son James) at Derry (Maurices Mills) was the widow of David Neylon.
While it may not make much sense / yield a result straight away, this ground-work can help you speed up the detection/ elimination process as you go along (or save $ when it feels time to hire a professional).
For what it is worth, a distant researcher (with Australian death certificate details) filled in a gaping hole in my early 19th century search in Ennistymon ... so keep plugging along... something will turn up!

Dear Sarah:
Thanks for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board.
The links that Rua has provided are very helpful and you should have a look through them.
There are parish registers for Ennistymon earlier than what is online. If you would like me to make contact on your behalf via a phone call, let me know and I will do so.
In addition, we have a few local volunteers who may be able to assist with local places, famiy names, etc. Again, let me know.
You might also take a look at the Clare Library website. There is a large collection of sources available online and it should definitely be viewed for further information.

If you need further information, please don't hesitate to ask.
Kind regards,
Jane.

Another lead...
On Jan. 18, 1818, James Neylon of Knocknaskeagh just north of Ennistymon, registered a 40s freehold (landlord William Burton Esq) with the following sons named on the lease of lives:
James Neylan Jr, John Neylan & Michael Neylan
By the time of Griffith's Valuation 1855, the Neylan farm (at 15a Knocknaskeagh aka Carrownahooan West was in the name of Daniel Neylan. These Neylons had a combined substantial farm of 53 acres (= strong farmer / grazier). Their house was old (valued at 15 shillings) and there were two smaller vacant houses on their farmland.
It may be possible that your James Neylon was residing here.
By the time of the 1901 Census, Daniel Neylon (1868-1949) of Carrownahooan was the only Neylon resident. He wed in 1909 and his young family appears in the 1911 Census. Dan Sr. was survived by his wife Margaret with son, Dan Neylon present in 1949.

Tá fáilte romhat!
(I'd certainly be taking up Jane's offer to help ... see if church records for this couple exist at Ennistymon, to be sure of your starting point).
Best of luck!
