Bridget McGrath, b. 1861? is my great grandmother who married John Campbell, b. 1959? Their son Peter was born Coalisland in November 1882 and this was confirmed by naturalization papers in the US. Through census records, I have found that John and Bridget left Ireland and were in Lancashire where sons Joseph, b. 1884 and Thomas b. 18/91? were born. The family moved from Lancashire to Flint, Wales where Mary, B. 1896, James,  b. 1898 and Rose Ann, b 1901 were born. .

The baptismal record for Peter, b. 1882 shows the location as Derrylaghan, his mother as Bridget Ann McGrath of Derrylaghan and father John Campbell Labourer. Parish district is Coalisland, Tyrone.

Although I have found many DNA connections for this family, I'm having trouble putting things together and seek help to confirm the names of Bridget & John's birth location, their parents and their siblings. I'm sure they went to Lancashire for work but feel there must have been other family in that location.

Hope you can help me with this puzzle.

  • Wendy,

Here’s Peter’s birth certificate for 14.11.1882. The townland is possibly Derryloughan. That’s on the western shore of Lough Neagh a mile or two from Coalisland:

The Valuation Revision records (on the PRONI website) list a John Campbell with land on plot 88 in Derryloughan. He is deleted in 1884 which ties in with the move to Lancashire. On the other hand he was there in 1860 in Griffiths Valuation too so might be a different John. Or was his father named John too?

The townland is full of McGraths and there’s a few Campbells about too.

I don’t see John & Bridget’s marriage. Without parents names and townlands it’s going to be hard to link them to any other families.

  • Thank you Elwyn. A question though. I don't see Derrylaghan on the Griffiths Valuation but I do see Derryloran... would that be the same location?

It will be difficult to search this family. There are quite a few of them.

  • Wendy,

There’s no Derrylaghan in my list of standardized townland names in Tyrone. I am speculating that it’s possibly Derryloughan. Spelling of place and personal names often varies, and it’s common to find this sort of minor difference.

It’s not Derryloran because that is in the Cookstown registration area.  This birth was in the Dungannon registration area, so it can’t be Derryloran.
