Looking for help to find where Sir Richard Musgrove's seaside place Grange Lodge in Whiting Bay might have been and whether it still exists.  I am trying to establish how Mary Desmond, (born in Clashmore in 1831 but daughter of Timothy Desmond who appears at Clashanahan, Ardmore on Griffiths Valuation in 1851)  ended up as a servant for Edward Musgrove and his wife Anastasia Gee and came with them to Otago, New Zealand, in 1858.  Edward Musgrove was a son of Sir Richard Musgrove the 3rd Baronet of Tourin House.  Apparanetly they had a summer place on the coast called Grange Lodge and this was pretty close to where the Desmonds appear on the GV.

Mary Desmond (daughter of Timthy Desmond and Mary Quarry) subseqently sent for her half-brother Patrick (son of Timothy Desmond and Mary O'Neil who married in Clashmore in 1835) who came to Otago in 1860, and then he sponsored their younger sister Julia and her husband John Riordan (married at Ardmore in 1859) who came as assisted immigants in 1861.  All four of them are buried together in Dunedin.  Any information on the Desmonds or Riordans would also be welcome.

    Dear Ceannfine:

Here is a reference from the Landed Estates Database for the Musgrave family:  http://landedestates.nuigalway.ie/LandedEstates/jsp/family-show.jsp?id=3233

The link to their houses is listed here:  http://landedestates.nuigalway.ie/LandedEstates/jsp/estate-show.jsp?id=3227

If you click on the link showing the XY coordinates, you will see the area.  I am copying a photo from the OSI website which shows where Grange House was located in the Cassini Map (1840s) and where the house is located (or another building) today.  From the second link above, it appears that there is still a house there.

If you need any further information, please let us know.

    All the best,

  • Dear Jane

Many thanks for your reply and helpful information.  The reason I am looking for specific locations is because I am part of a team at Toitu Otago Settlers Museum in Dunedin (New Zealand) that is making a documentary about our region's early settlers and this includes a component that traces individual migrants and families from their home places to where they ended up in Otago.  Mary Desmond is one of the early Irish settlers that we are focussing on and we plan to be in Waterford on 31 July to film her origin story.  Our target locations are: Clashahany townland in Grange parish where Mary's family lived in the 1830s when she and her half siblngs were born, and Tourin House at Cappagh, where the Musgraves were based.  The Grange House on the coast is also of interest because that localtion puts the two families physically close together and possibly accounts for Mary securing a position as a servant to Edward and Anastasia Musgrave, which is what brought her to Otago in 1859.  So we really appreciate your help in identifying the places we need to find.  If you would like to discuss this further, feel free to contact me at the Museum:  sean.brosnahan@dcc.govt.nz

    Regards
