He came to Quebec City as a child in the 1840s. He lived with his uncles and aunts, Patrick (1809-1881), James(1816-1882), Mary(1810-1854) and Anne (1816-1878). When James died, his obituary stated that he was from Clogheen so I assume John was too. The parents of the uncles and aunts were a Thomas Lonergan and a Mary Walsh. I would like to find out who John's parents were. I searched the Clogheen parish registries on line without success. John evidently got married to a Mary Moriarty however there is no record of this marriage to help ascetain who his parents were. That is why I look to Clogheen for an answer. John became a gardener and his uncle Patrick was a gardener.
I found a Thomas Lonergan among the Tithe Defaulters in Shanbally. This made me wonder if he was grand parent of the aunts and uncles including Patrick. I wondered this becaus I know Shanbally is close by to Clogheen and I know there was a Shanbally Castle and demesne. And they must have had gardeners. But this is speculation. I wold like to be certain about who were the parents of my great grandfather, John Lonergan.

Hello Miriam,
Thank you very much for your research. It is very kind of you.
Yes, a cousin of mine had brought my attention to the Ardfinnan Thomas Lonergan/Mary Walsh couple. But I could not find the baptisms corresponding to the Partrik, James*, Mary and Anne that I listed. I looked for them in Clogheen, Ardfinnan and Ballylooby into the bargain.
The reason why I am reluctant to give up on Clogheen is because there was another Thomas Lonergan who lived in Quebec City at the time of my great grandfather. They would often attend at each other’s children’s baptism. So I assume they were cousins of some degree. When that Thomas died his civil record recorded that he was from Clogheen and that his parents were Michael Lonergan and Helen O’Sullivan. That and James’ obituary rather confirmed in my mind that. I did find Michael Lonergan and Helen O’Sullivan together in Clogheen in the Parish register, February 6 1836. Then among the Tithe Defaulters for Shanbally I found a Thomas Lonergan and a Michael Lonergan.
James’ newspaper obituary makes no reference to anyone else but his burial entry only refers to his parents as being Thomas Lonergan and Mary Walsh. Thanks again for the trouble you took to answer.

Hello
Recently I discovered that my O'Donnell ancestors were from Clogheen, Tipperary. My ggg grandfather was Thomas O'Donnell. Son of Thomas O'Donnell & Honora Hynes. Thomas immigrated to North America via Canada. He was married in Quebec in 1845 before moving south and finally residing in Albany, NY. Scanning through the Clogheen baptism register I see the Loneragan surname in various baptism records with O'Donnells. Have you come across the O'Donnell &/or Hynes name in your searches? I'm also wondering if numerous individuals made the trip together from Clogheen to Canada?
Thank you

Hi Christopher,
All good questions, I have pored over the Clogeen records and seen O'Donnell and Hynes but I have not linked them to my line.Since I wrote what appears above I have discovered that my ggrandfather was born in Waterford but his parents were from Clogheen, They were John Lonergan and Ellen Flynn. I imagine , as you suggest, that people came over in groups if they could, but have no evidence to prove it in the case of my family. Howevr, they settled in a village called Mount Pleasant on the outskirts of Quebec City and I find a lot of names there that you would also find in Clogheen. Gaffney, O'Donnell, Nash, Lonergan and Conway.
Have a Happy St. Patrick's DayJoe Lonergan, jhlonergan@hotmail.com

Hello Joe
Thanks for the quick reply. I will be staying on top of this. If I make a connection I will be in touch. Have you taken an Ancestry DNA test? If so, what is your screen name? Mine is cswhite1968.
Thanks, Chris White, AlbanyGraveDigger@gmail.com

I've done an Ancestry DNA test and have discovered that my 3x Great Grandmother was Ellen Lonergan (b.1817) from Clogheen. She marred William Cleary. I see that one of their sons, Henry Cleary (b.1860) Clogheen, emigrated to Vermont and again, Ancestry has connected me to a 4th Cousin out there. My line of the Clearys emigrated to London a generation later. The DNA has been a really helpful tool in solving some of my Irish family mysteries.

Could anyone identify the middle name and/or initial of Capt. John Lonergan? I am in possession of documents from the mid 1860's that reference a "John F. Lonergan" or "John T. Lonergan." These documents originated from Pennsylvania or New York (U.S.A) during the spring and fall of 1866. I am unsure of the middle initial due to the ornate cursive.
Also, any reference to Capt. John Lonergan I have found does not include a middle name.
Thank you.
P.S. Would there have been a large # of individuals with the surname "Lonergan" in the U.S. of A. During 1866?
