I believe that my Great grandfather, Patrick Donahue Winter was from this parish. He was born in 1845 to Patrick Winter and Margaret Donnelly Winter. My great Grandfather moved to Scotland and married Catherine Gallager In 1868. He then went to The US to find work leaving Catherine behind until he got settled.  She gave birth to their son Patrick Thomas Winter, born October 13, 1869. Catherine passed away July 26, 1841 in Glasgow. My Great grandfather Patrick Donahue Winter returned to Scotland to find out his wife had passed and their child had died in childbirth. It was not until his son Patrick Thomas was a grown man did his father find out that he had not died and he was still alive living in Scotland. They became reunited and Patrick Thomas moved to San Francisco where he died and was buried. In the mean time my Great grandfather went back to San Francisco believing his wife and child were dead and met my Great grandmother Margaret McMahon, they had 7 children of their own.

My Grandmother was caught burning the family bible after my grandfather died so all the family history was lost. Any help finding out their Irish Heritage would be appreciated.

  • Dear Sarah:

Thank you for your message board post and apologies for the late reply.  The parish registers that you might be interested in are those of New Quay.  The civil parish of Killonaghan covered the parish of Fanore and the older name was Glanaragah.  Those registers are held at the National Library of Ireland and they are online:  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0622  You may also be interested in taking a look at the Clare Library website which contains a lot of online resources that may be helpful to your research.  The website link for the library is here:   http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/genealog.htm

In  addition, there is an online forum of genealogy and family history enthusiasts who often share information about County Clare.  On this forum, there are transcribed parish registers and New Quay is one of them.  It is worth a look.  Their website link is:  http://www.ourlibrary.ca/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=6872

You might also consider creating an Ancestor Profile for one of the family and share it on the XO Chronicles feature (tab located at the top of this page)..  Many of these profiles are read by other members who may also be researching the same family as yourself.  It can be a great way to collaborate with others.  If you have any further questions, please let me know.  The very best of luck with your research.

    Kind regards,

    Jane
