Patrick Killigrew, Knockanpower Lower

There is a way to pin down a more detailed location for this Killigrew household within this(*) Knockanpower Lower townland in 1901 & 1911, which involves using the records in the Valuation Office in Dublin city (Lower Abbey Street) i.e. the Revaluation Records aka Cancelled Land Books.

There are no Killigrew properties shown at this townland at the time of the primary valuation which is dated 1851 for this area, so seems your Patrick took over the property some time after that.  The Cancelled Land Books continue on from Griffith’s and detail changes in the properties and alterations relating to the occupier and lessor. The records for some counties have been digitized and are available on computers in the office, but searches for Co. Waterford currently require checking the original books.

The volumes for rural areas are listed by Electoral District, civil parish and townland and each one covers about 10 to 20 years of changes, with different coloured ink used to indicate different date. The same plot numbers carry forward, so you can usually use the original Griffith maps so figure out the location of each property - the Valuation Office hold more recent maps.

* There are two separate townlands in Co. Waterford named Knockanpower Lower, the one where your Patrick lived is in Ringagonagh civil parish near the coast south east of the town of Dungarvan. The other Knockanpower Lower townland is in Colligan civil parish and well to the north of Dungarvan.

Thank you so much for your help.  I have been able to find very little about the Killegrew's/Killigrew's in County Waterford so all the help I have received has been wonderful.  The greatest gift was getting access to information on my grandmother, Honora Killegrew which resulted in me being able to obtain citizenship through descent.  I'm waiting for my Irish passport application to finish being processed so I can use it for my Ireland trip.  Many, many, many thanks!  Sharon

Based on the births of Patrick & Mary's children, they moved to Knockanpower Lower townland sometime between 1883 and 1885, before that they seem to have been in nearby Lagnagoushee and Meelahorna townlands.

They married in 1872 at St. Nicholas RC Ringarona in Ringville, also nearby and Mary nee Lenihan indicated that at the time she was living at  Meelahorna [Mweelahorna] townland, Patrick was living at Rathnameneena [Rathnameneenagh] townland. Knockanpower lower townland is adjacent to Ring/Ringville village, between the road (R674) and the coast - see attached Google street view overlooking part of the townland.

How wonderful, Jane!  Thank you for letting us know about Eddie Cantwell and making the initial introduction for me.  I am so excited to be able to learn more about my Great Grandparents and the area of Ireland where they lived.  My Grandmother died before I was born and my Grandfather, Dad and his brothers and sister spoke very little of her other than to call her 'a saint.'  The remainder of my family came from Cork and Kerry.  We will be visiting with some family in Kenmare and the Inchamore region of Ballyvourney.

My husband and I had a wonderful meeting with Eddie Cantwell and were blessed to meet Nicholas Graves of An Rinn as well.  They drove us all around the areas where my paternal grandmother and her family came from and even made arrangements for us to meet the last surviving Cilligru in the area.  Nicholas tracks families who have emigrated from An Rinn to America and was able to tell me about Great Aunts and Uncles from Charlestown, Massachusetts that I remember as a child.  It was a totally amazing experience.  Eddie and Nicholas are fonts of knowledge and their passion for Ireland's history is palpable.  Thank you can't begin to portray what it means to me to have you introduce me to Eddie Cantwell.  Ireland Reaching Out is performing an invaluable service to those of us who are researching our Irish heritage.  Through the time spent with Eddie and Nicholas and the information gleaned through the message board, I have been able to locate historical information that was lost and can now pass it on to my children and grandchildren.  What a very special gift.
