Hugh’s death indicates he was born around 1811. Kingsmill’s baptism records only start in 1842 so tracing back earlier than 1811 will be pretty difficult. You are up against the 1800 barrier at which much Irish research stops.

PRONI does have a 1788 lease (D266/26) which tells you Pattons were living there in the 1700s:

 Lease for 998 years from 1 Nov. 1787, of 17 acres, 1 rood, 35 perches, Rent: £9.18.9 p.a. plus Fees, Fine: £2.12.7 every 20 years from 1 Nov. 1786. [Endorsed is a note of assignment by Henry McParlan to William Patton, Carrickananny, Co. Armagh], between Henry McParland, Drumilly and Patrick McNulty, Drumilly, Co. Armagh, for land at Drumilly, Co. Armagh.

There are some other leases for the townland for the years 1775-1829 which you might want to look at: D1606/3/8 as they may reveal other relationships. (You’ll need to go to PRONI for them as the details aren’t on the e-catalogue).

There were 4 Patton farms in the townland in 1901, including William who inherited from Hugh. I would expect them all to be related.

If you don’t already have them, I noticed marriages for 2 of David’s sisters. Robert married Robert Madden on 20.5.1864 and Susanna married Robert Neville on 23.12.1870. Both at Kingsmills.

Thank you for your help . I had found about the sisters of David and their marriages but only knew about an earlier William but couldn’t make a connection with my ancestor Hugh. I can’t find any information about Hugh’s marriage to Ann Gourley this information was on David’s death certificate

If Hugh & Ann were born c 1811-1816 as their ages at death suggest, then they probably married in the mid to late 1830s, and apparently they married before April 1845 when civil registration began. Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church. If Ann was Church of Ireland then their records for Loughgilly do exist - they start in 1804 - but no other denomination around Kingsmills has any records for the period you need. (The Church of Ireland records don’t appear to be on-line anywhere, so far as I can tell. There is a copy in PRONI in Belfast though). So if it wasn’t a Church of Ireland marriage, then there probably is no documentary record of the marriage to find. Don’t expect too much from a marriage in the 1830 even if you did find it. All the records tend to contain is the couples names, the date and their 2 witnesses. Occasionally a townland or occupation but not parents names etc.

Thank you will try and follow that up.i think David was born about 1854 so his baptism may be recorded at kingsmills. He does not appear in the civil registration records

Civil registration began on 1.1.1864 so for births before that church records are the only real option.

No I don’t have a precise postal address. I would just write to the Minister, Kingsmill Presbyterian Church, Loughgilly, Co. Armagh. That should work OK.

One other item I know is that Beatrice Elliott produced a book entitled “Kingsmill Presbyterian church 1788 – 1988” and it contains a census conducted by Rev Meeke of all families attending around 1864. You might want to try and locate a copy of that. The Presbyterian Historical Society in Belfast do have a copy so far as I am aware and may be able to help (by copying the census for example).

Thank you I have found a page from that book online about the Rev Meake who made a list of communicant members. Hugh and Ann were mentioned on this list
