I started out looking for information on Thomas Egan, born in County Clare between 1862-1864.  He was my great-grandfather.  He married my great-grandmother Bridget Boyle in Liverpool in June 1890.  Their marriage certificate indicated that his father was also Thomas Egan.

I think that Thomas Egan (my great-grandfather) was the son of Thomas Egan and Bridget Hogan, married in Feb. 1856 at O'Callaghans Mills.   I found birth records for their children - Thomas (born 1862, Baptized 1862 in Broadford), Bridget (born May 1865 in Kilkishan, baptized at O'Callaghan Mills), Penelope (born March 1867 in Quin), Patt (I assume Patrick, born March 1869, baptized at Quin) and John (born Feb 1873 at Newmarket).

My Questions -

1) I am not familiar with County Clare.  Does it seem reasonable to have all these different geographical locations for the children's births and baptisms ?

2) There seem to be some gaps in the family (no records of children born from time of marriage in 1856 until 1862 when Thomas was born, no records of children between 1867 and 1869).  Is there anywhere to easily find all children born to Bridget Hogan and Thomas Egan or shall I just keep searching with spelling variations on their names ?

Thank you very much for any suggestions/comments you may have,

Janet (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada)

  • Dear Janeteo:

Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site.

I am the Volunteer Coordinator for the programme and I am also the Parish Liaison for Tulla County Clare which is a neighbouring parish to Kilkishen/O'Callaghan's Mills, Quin and nearby to Broadford.

I agree with your questions as to the children all being born in different parishes.  They may/may not be from the same family.  However, all the parishes that you mention all border one another.  IN addition, the church of Kilkishen and O'Callaghan's Mills are the one parish (civil parish is known as Clonlea) and there is only one register which is online.  As you noted that a marriage record exists and listed them as marrying in O'CAllaghan's Mills, it would appear that that was Bridget Hogan's home parish and the most likely place where she was born.  Unfortunately, many of the parish registers have gaps, and often the priest forgot to write down the baptisms or in some cases, wrote incorrect information (child name as Bridget instead of Mary, for example).

I do know that the Broadford registers were in a very poor state, and were water damaged and have been transcribed since.  However, there may have been some pages missing or illegible due to that damage.

The years of 1860-1864 which just precede Civil Registration are sometimes the most difficult area to research as often, registers weren't kept.  It may be that there are other children, but they weren't recorded (but baptised), so other documents need to be researched.  If you believe that some of the family remained in Ireland, you can search the Census records for 1901 and 1911 for this family.  The link is below:

In addition, you should also check the Civil Registration records which are available for free on:

    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp

The birth records are available from 1864-1917, marriages from 1864-1940, and deaths from 1864-1966.  The Registration District is Tulla, Ennis and Scariff.

There are graveyard inscriptions online for Killuran graveyard (located in O'CAllaghan's Mills).  They are on the Clare Library website:

The Kilkishen/O'CAllaghan's Mills registers are all avaialble (as transcriptions) on the Clare Library site at this link:

The Quin records have been transcribed and will hopefully be online in the next number of months.  They are online through the Clare Past Forum which you might be interested in joining.

Hopefully I have not confused you with all of the above links!  If you have any further questions, please contact me directly at:  tulla@irelandxo.com or jhalloranryan@irelandxo.com.

    The very best of luck!

    Kind regards,

    Jane.
