Hello-

I am trying to work on a bit of mystery. Through some research I believe that a group of ancestors possibly came from three locations, all within the Ennistymon Parish.  Carhuintedane, Ennistymon, and Teerleheen.  The family names are Devitt, Hoar/Hehir, Ruane/Rohan and maybe Kelleher, McGuire.  There isn't enough definitive information in any of the available resources (Griffiths etc) to connect to any specific family or to even be sure those townlands are correct.  What would be most useful are the Catholic Parish records for Kilmanaheen, however it seems only the 1870-1880 are available online.  It appears as though the Clare Heritage and Genealogical Centre has access for a much greater range of years, but only if you pay for commissioned research.  Are there any resources I am missing?  I've checked the Clare Library already.

Thank you.

  • Hi Alison,

Due to Coved-19 virus it is difficult to get access to the sources. The 1901 census  - www.nationalarchives.ie/census may be of some help. There are a number of "Devitt" families in Ennistymon town (DED Ennistymon and Moy - DED Moy) Form B1 will give you the townland Parish (Civil Parish). It may not be the years you are seeking, but it will give an indication of the various families in the parish.

  • Alison,

Further to above, the web site  www.irishgenealogy.ie - Free Site - has a list of marriages 1865 to 1895 where either the groom or the bride were named Devitt. A Maria Devitt married a James Marrinan. Witnesses: John Hoare and Ellen Marrinan. Miltown Malbay has a birth of a "John Hore" in 1866. Mother: Bridget Hore. The record may not correspond with the Ennistymon catholic parish, but usually the bride married in her home parish.

The writing in many cases is difficult to read!

  • Hello and thank you for taking time to respond.  The difficulty is that I need to be able to connect children born in the 1840s-50s to a set of parents.  The censuses are too late, as are the marriages.  The information we have from the US is inconsistent at best so the only way I can think of to get the information is to go through many years of bith records, which is what I've done in other circumstances (and yes, the writing is incredibly difficult to read!).  It is unfortunate that records weren't included in the others digitized for access through the NLI.

    Sincerely-

  • Allison:

The subscription site Roots Ireland which is affiliated with all of the county Heritage Centers has been slowly adding  records for Co. Clare RC parishes over the last few years. Here is an announcement from last December   https://www.irishgenealogynews.com/2020/12/rootsireland-adds-61000-bmd-…

Hopefully, they will add the pre-1870 records for kilmanaheen/Ennistymon in the near future.

  • Thank you Roger. I will keep that resource in mind and check periodically for updates.

  • The inability to get records pre 1870 has nothing to do with Covid. I've been asking why the Ennistymon parish records are not online as are other parishes ever since irishgenealogy.ie first gave us the images for other parishes. The only way I've found to get around it is very very detailed work with DNA matches. I've been able to get maiden names for my two 3x greatgrandmothers from the area by studying names that came up frequently and especially with finding people with those maternal names have moved to the same area as siblings or cousins moved to when they emigrated to America.
