Our family is interested in finding our Irish roots. We have found a John Cantlon, born in 1784, in Tralee Parish, Kerry, Ireland, who married a Catherine Breen. They had two sons, Richard, born 1805, at Kells, Kerry, Ireland, and John, born 1807. John died in 1869 in Ireland, and son, Richard died in 1878 in Wisconsin. We also think that Richard married a Mary Margaret Hogan. Mary Margaret was born 1794 in Ireland and died 1878, in Wisconsin. Richard and Mary Margaret had 7 children, Thomas, James, John, Eugene, Richard, Kathryn and Johanna. Thomas, born 1827, in Rockford, Milltown, Ireland, married Abigail Cullity in 1867. Thomas died 1898.
These are the records we have that we'd like verified. We would dearly love to find out if we have relatives today in Ireland. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you so much for any assistance.
Sincerely, Nancy Cantlon

Hi Nancy, wishing you lots of luck with your search.
Acc. to the 1901 Census there was 125 people spelling their name Cantillon in Co. Kerry, a number of them in the Tralee Urban area. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/results.jsp?census_year=1901&surname=Cantillon&exact=&firstname=&county19011911=Kerry&county1821=&county1831=&county1841=&county1851=&townland=&ded=&age=&sex=&relationToHead=&religion=&education=&occupation=&marriageStatus=&marriageYears=&childrenBorn=&childrenLiving=&birthplace=&language=&deafdumb=&search=Search&sort=&pageSize=100&houseNumber=&familiesNumber=&malesNumber=&femalesNumber=&maleServNumber=&femaleServNumber=&estChurchNumber=&romanCatNumber=&presbNumberDiv=&protNumber=&parish=&barony=&yearsMarried=&causeOfDeath=&yearOfDeath=&familyId=&ageInMonths=&pager.offset=0
Can you let us know where Thomas and Abigail married in 1867 and where Thomas died in 1898?
If you have a Census link to Richard's family in Wisconsin that would also be really helpful.
Also do you know where John died in Ireland in 1869?
Looking forward to hearing from you again and hoping that with further informatio we can be of more assistance.
Best wishes

Hello,
I happened upon this message while doing a general County Kerry search for various relatives. I believe my 3rd great-grandmother is the Gobnet "Abbie" Cullity referenced above. Abbie's first husband was John Mahoney, born in Ireland circa 1828. John and Abbie were married in Wisconsin, USA in 1856 and had four children: Dennis (my 2nd great-grandfather), Johanna "Josie", Hanorah "Nanno" and Jeremiah. John died in Ettrick, Wisconsin in 1863 (a few versions of this story - he either jumped in a cold spring after a hot day of haying and had a heart attack, or died of pneumonia after bathing in cold spring). Abbie remarried after his death to the Thomas Cantlon referenced in Nancy's initial post, circa 1867. While I don't have a documented location, it seems likely that it was Ettrick, Wisconsin, where they were both living at the time. They are reflected in the 1870 and 1880 US Censuses as living in Ettrick, Wisconsin on the Mahoney farm. They did not have any children together. Thomas Cantlon died July 15, 1898 in Madison, Wisconsin, at the Mendota State Hospital.
Nancy - are you my friend Tammy Hanson's mother, by chance? - my 2nd great-grandfather, Jeremiah McGillicuddy (Jerry Mack in US) was baptized in Rockford, Milltown, Kerry. I suspect the Cullity, Mahoney, McGililcuddy and Cantlon all families knew each other in Ireland before emigrating and settling in Ettrick. I also have the last name Hogan show up a few times in my family tree, although not as a direct ancestor.
Here is an 1870 US Census showing Richard Cantlon and wife Margaret. They are listed under dwelling #19, family #20, in the household of their son, James Cantlon. Directly above James Cantlon's entry is brother John Cantlon at dwelling #18, and Thomas Cantlon and wife Abbie, along with Mahoney children, at dwelling #17. https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/7163/4268813_00369?pid=11623560&treeid=118407082&personid=182009627751&usePUB=true&_phsrc=uec33560&_phstart=successSource
I'm on the hunt for Mahoney, McGillicuddy and Cullity relatives in Kerry and Cork myself, but I'll start a different post for that.

Oh, my gosh, Sondi! I am Tammy's mom! This is a wonderful coincidence. I visited Lori and Jim at Brady Olson's birthday memorial in December. What a small world.
Your info is great. Bruce and I are going on a 14 day cruise in a few hours so I won't be able to pick up on your material until I get back but I'm so grateful you made contact.
I can't wait to tell Tammy we've crossed paths!
Will be back in Wisconsin in early March. Thanks again! NancyCantlon
