Hi:
My wife and I live in the US and are trying to learn about her ancestors who emigrated from Dingle around 1860. This was a bit of a challenge at first since their surname is spelled “Lyons” here in the States but was “Lyne” in Ireland.
We were finally able to locate them through her GG-Grandparents: Timothy Lyne and Bridget O’Neil (spelled “Neal” over there). Please see the attached document which has birth information for four children: Thomas, Owen, Timothy, and John. According to these listings the family came from the townland of Ballymore.
We’ve been unable to locate any other records for the parents, Timothy and Bridget, which seems odd since church records exist for at least two decades before 1841 when Thomas was born. Is there somewhere else we can look to find the marriage record or anything else pertaining to them?
Also, my wife has a DNA match on Ancestry who claims to descend from a fifth child - Michael - but we’ve been unable to locate him. Is there some other place that might have his information?
We know that was a difficult time in Irish history and maybe other records don’t exist but thought we would try. Any guidance is much appreciated. Thanks for your help.
Kevin

Here's a little more information concerning "Michael". I located his marriage record in which he confirms his parents were Timothy Lyne and Bridget O'Neal. Please see attachment. (Neither name is spelled correctly but that's normal enough.) It lists his age as 21 which, if accurate, means a birth date of 1839 making him the first child. I can't find him in Irish records but I'm hoping you can. By the way, US Census records say the entire family (including Timothy and Bridget) immigrated to Massachusetts in 1853.
Thanks again,
Kevin

Hi Kevin, I couldn't open your files, sorry. Any chance you could copy and paste into this section?
The only Lyne I found in Ballymore was in 1852 in Griffiths Valuation, a Patrick Lyne................ see the link.
http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNam…I picked up this link in familysearch, a Michael Lyne in Somerville, Middlesex, Massachusetts in 1855.
Is this your Michael? Can you also let me know if you were looking at the Dingle records for the births in this site https://registers.nli.ie/
Thanks

Hi Margot:
Thanks for getting back to me. I resent the documents as PNG files. If that doesn't work I'll try something else.
I found the four Dingle records at the IrishGenealogy site. Here's the link I used: https://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/search.jsp?name2fm=timothy&name2l=&namefm=bridget&namel=o%27neal&location=&yyfrom=&yyto=&submit=Search&sort=date&pageSize=100&diocese=KERRY+%28RC%29&parish=¢ury=&decade=&ddBfrom=&ddMfrom=&ddDfrom=&mmBfrom=&mmMfrom=&mmDfrom=&yyBfrom=&yyMfrom=&yyDfrom=&ddBto=&ddMto=&ddDto=&mmBto=&mmMto=&mmDto=&yyBto=&yyMto=&yyDto=&locationB=&locationM=&locationD=&member0=Choose%3A&member1=&member2=&member3=&member4=&member5=&member6=&member7=&member8=&member9=&namef0=&namef1=&namef2=&namef3=&namef4=&namef5=&namef6=&namef7=&namef8=&namef9=&namel0=&namel1=&namel2=&namel3=&namel4=&namel5=&namel6=&namel7=&namel8=&namel9=&keyword=dingle&event
I'll see if I can locate the Michael Lyne in Somerville, Middlesex, Massachusetts in 1855 you mentioned. It's the first I've heard of him, but the date fits his timeline.

Hi Margot:
I'm just checking to see if you were able to read the information I resent on the 24th. I know you had difficulty reading the first attachments so I put them in a different format. Hopefully that did the trick. Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks again,
Kevin

Hi Kevin T,
Thanks for the file, yes I could see that on, great stuff.
Sorry I havn't came back to you but this has been bugging me, I keep on searching for Michael.
This record which is of a Michael Lyne born about 1830, 2nd from the bottom. this was in 1879.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939V-RMDM-K?i=864&cc=1849782
and......
This one........ Michael Lyne born 1843, he is halfway down the page, but note......he has 2 children with him Martha and Maria and no wife. Are the names in your family?
This is in 1865
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939V-519R-RD?i=400&cc=18497…You said that you have Thomas, Owen, Timothy, and John.
Have you all of their history?
I am wondering if you are missing a name, then that could be Michael and he used his second or Confirmation name. Which I have found loads of times.I cannot find a birth for Michael Lyne, sorry.
This was the record I saw of a Michael Lyne in 1855 Census that I mentioned earlier in Massachusetts 3rd from the bottom.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-DH2Q-FDW?i=39&cc=14599…
Let me know about Martha and Maria.

Hi Margot:
Can you read the PDF I attached? The first record is from the 1855 Massachusetts State Census and Michael is listed as the oldest child (the surname in the US is always spelled "Lyons"). Don't be fooled by the father's first name: "Gemmathy". On the actual form the name looks more like "Timothy" and this the right family anyway.
This is the earliest mention of Michael I can find. At least it proves - along with the marriage record - he existed and was part of my wife's family even if we can't find his birth record in Ireland. My wife is a descendant of Timothy Jr., the next son listed after Michael.
But I have no idea what happened to the two older boys (Thomas and Owen) listed in Irish records (see the "Four Lynes children" attachments). Maybe they stayed in Dingle. Do you mind if I ask you to see if you can find any mention of them? They would appear as "Lyne" over there.
Thanks again,
Kevin

Hi Margot:
Update: we've found Thomas over here, but not Owen. As far as we can tell he didn't make the trip. Please let us know if you see any mention of him. Thanks for your help.

Kevin, Its been a while since you last exchanged posts about your Lyne family. I too have been tracking this name and found records of Lynes (Lyons) taking a ship from Tralee in 1852. But, they went to NY and their names were, Daniel, Florence (sone), Thomas, Jerry, John and Honora. They later settled in Ohio by 1854. Any connection, please let me know. My Gedmatch kit # xp2748861. I am on Ancestry too, Mark S Lyons, and can be reached by email - markslyons@gmail.com

Hi Mark:
Sorry, but I don't recognize those names and am not aware of any relatives who went to Ohio. Also, according to GEDmatch we are not a match unless I lower the threshold below 7cM. I don't think we are related, at least in a way where we could figure out the connection.
It's interesting though that you mentioned "Tralee" for the great majority of people with a surname of "Lyne" lived in County Kerry at the time of the Great Famine. You may know that already. Since I posted those messages in 2019 I've found proof that my people did indeed come from the general area near the town of Dingle but were likely not the ones I wrote about above. I can't find my ancestors. The problem is there are just too many missing records from that era. You probably know that too!
Good luck,
KevinKevinT
