I am researching Thomas Edward Gormly, b. 14 Mar 1851, Newcastle West, Limerick.  Gormly was a sailor and most of the records I found deal with his career.  I would like to find information about his parents.  What I have so far.

Jul 1875 - First Mate Exam passed, Liverpool, England

1876 - Ship the Palawan chief officer - from Sydney to Liverpool

2 Mar 1878, Master Ordinary Examination passed, Liverpool, England

12 Dec 1883 - about 5 May 1884, Sokoto, (Sokodo?), Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, 1st mate

14 Jun - 26 Nov 1884, Idomene, Liverpool, 1st mate

2 Jan - 6 Dec 1885 - Breadalbane, Liverpool, 1st mate

23 Dec 1885 - 26 Feb 1887 - Coldinghame London, 1st mate

On 13 January 1886, Thomas E. Gormly, age 34, mate from Limerick, arrived in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, from New York, aboard the Coldinghame.  (New South Wales, Australia, Unassisted Immigrant Passenger Lists, 1826-1822)

Aug - Oct 1887 - Lloyds S.S., London, 1st mate

24 Oct 1887 - Admitted to Dreadnought Seaman's Hospital, England.  Discharged 24 Nov 1887.  Thoracic aneurysm.  Much improved.  Ship Lloyds.  From Limerick.

12 Dec 1887 - 22 Feb 1888 - Larnica, Windsor, Nova Scotia, from London to New York, 1st mate

On 22 November 1888, when crossing a ferry from New Jersey to New York, a pickpocket stoles Thomas Edward Gormly's papers.

On 16 May 1889, the Board of Trade awarded Thomas Edward Gormly Master certificate in the Merchant Service.  Residence, Fermoy, Cork, Ireland  (UK and Ireland, Masters and Mates Certificates, 1850-1927)

I suspect there may be a connection to Edward Gormley who was master of the Croom workhouse in County Limerick in 1850.  Later Edward Gormley became master of the workhouse in Fermoy, County Cork.  In 1889 Thomas Edward Gormly's residence was listed as Fermoy.

Thomas Edward Gormly died 25 Dec 1889 and is buried in Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Colma, San Mateo County, California, USA.  The cemetery has no information concerning his next of kin.

Any help would be appreciated.

  • H. Shimek,

If he reported his residence in 1889 as Fermoy, Cork, and he was last in the US the year before in 1888; I am not sure the record from the cemetery in Colma is your man.

That cemetery serves many who lived in the San Francisco bay area...I suppose he could have sailed there from NY in a year's time. On Ancestry, there is an indexed record

for the death of a Thomas Edward Gormly in 1889. I do not know why it does not show up on the irishgenalogy.ie website.  I tried to find it, but no

success. Perhaps you can contact them for more details. Here are the details of the index:

    Name  Thomas Edward Gormly

    Estimated Birth Year Abt 1852

    Date of Registration 1890 Oct-Nov-Dec

    Death Age 38

  • Thank you Carolyn.  I wrote months ago requesting the record you reference but never received a response.  This record on ancestry https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/60998/images/engltna1d… of UK deaths at sea has Thomas Edward Gormly from Newcastle West, Limerick, dying in San Francisco 25 Dec 1889.

  • Hi,

Well, that record looks very conclusive..I stand corrected! I did not see that Ancestry record. Such a young man to die of heart disease and diabetes.

    Regards,
