I hope someone can help me. My wife's grandfather was a Thomas Scott Martin. He married in 1869 at Monaghan Workhouse where he was a teacher. On the marriage certificate his father is given as Thomas Martin, a farmer in Tyrone. Thomas Scott was born about 1849 according to his gravestone. I am assuming Thomas Martin Snr was living in Confleacle as that seemed to have strong Methodist congregation and there is a Thomas Martin on Griffith, but I cannot get any further than that. Any suggestions/advice would be welcome!

Methodism took much longer to become established as a separate denomination in Ireland than in some other countries. Many people didn;t want to split from the Church of Ireland and continued to use it for baptisms and marriages, in addition to attending Methodist services. There were no Methodist baptism por marriages in Clonfeacle until 1870 or thereabouts. For events before that they are likely to have used the Church of Ireland. Unfortunately all the Church of Ireland churches in Clonfeacle parish lost their early records in the 1922 fire in Dublin, and they have nothing earlier that the 1870s either. Consequently if he was born in that parish, there's probably no surviving record of Thomas's birth c 1849. That will make it difficult to identify his parents with certainty.
If his father was a farmer and alive c 1860 then he should be in Griffiths but it be hard to say for certain which is the right one.
