Greetings - I just found out my great grandmother Margaret Touhey b. 1870 (daughter of John Touhey and Mary Carty) was born in Kilseily, Limerick, Co Clare.  When I read her civil birth record it was difficlut if it was Kilseily or Kilseely, there was another name I could not recognize or decipher ??? Surthahull/Larthalian.  Margaret has 5 siblings that I have identifed as well.  I Would like to better understand the location of her birth so I can determine what her parish her family was in.

Sincerely,

Regina Cronin Walsh

  • Hi Regina,

Kilseily is a townland very close to the village of Broadford in east County Clare. Limerick is the registration district. Broadford is the parish.

The birth record is difficult to make out but under the witness name it appears to start with a G - here is the 1901 census showing the townlands in Kilseily http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Clare/Kilseily/

    I hope this helps.

  • Hi Jim - thank you for your response.  I had meant to attach the copy of Margaret Touhey's civil birth record so you could actually see the names of the locations/towns/areas noted under the family's names.  If you would take a look and see what you decipher out of ??? Surthahull/Larthalian.

    Sincerely,

    Regina

  • Hi Regina,

I had looked up the entry and I think it is a version of Gortacullin which you will see on the census link I posted previously. Unfortunately there are no Tuohys in the 1901 census in Gortacullin so I can't say for sure.

Were the other 5 siblings all born at the same address ? Do you know when or where the parents John and Mary died?

  • Hi Jim - yes, all the children were born at the same address, the name that is undecipherable looks exactly the same on all the civil birth records and I had 5 of 6 records.  I believe John died in Ireland.  I looked on irishgenealogy.ie and couldn't find him assuming he died in Co Clare.  Everyone else immigrated between 1880s and 1890's.  John Touhey's wife immigrated to the US about 1890 without John so I suspect he had died prior to 1890.  I noticed that there was a person who witnessed the births for all 5 records, named Bridget Touhey.  There was a Bridget Touhey in the 1901 census whose profession was nurse and domestic.  It said she was a widow, age 66.  She was in her 30's-40's at the time she attended all the births.  She must have been John Touhey's brother's wife or at least a family member.   I found what could be John Touhey's parents in Limerick City, Ireland names John Touhy (no E) and Anne Gleeson and I found 4 children one a John born 1828 in Limerick City.  How far would that be from Gortacullin?  I've been unable to find Mary Carty's birth info.  She died in the US at age 100.

    Appreciate your help.
