Looking for information about the William and Margaret Ford Walsh family from Curraghturk, Ballylanders.  My great grandmother is Helen (Nellie).  She married Patrick Gallahue from Lackendarragh, Anglesborough in 1915 in Methuen, Massachusetts, USA.

In 1901 Census they were in house number 12.  In 1911 Census they were in house number 12.

This is what I know about the members of this family

Father - William was listed as age 60 in 1901 and age 67 in 1911.  Occupation is farmer.

Mother - Margaret was listed as age 40 in 1901 and age 62 in 1911.  Maiden name was Ford or Forde.  I believe her parents were Maurice Ford and Esther Powell.

In 1911 Census William and Mary were listed as having been married for 26 years with 9 children, and 9 children living.

Son – Robert – Not listed with family in 1901, but found a Robert Walsh age 20 with the Thomas and Margaret Forde family of  Ballyduff, Cullane.  In 1911 Census his age is listed as 30.

Son – David listed as age 13 in 1901 Census and age 24 in 1911 Census.  On Apr 5, 1911, there is a David Walsh onboard the Ivernia for Boston, Massachusetts.  He is listed right below my great grandfather Patrick Gallahue.  In 1920 U.S. Census, there is a David Walsh on Pleasant Terrace in Lawrence, Massachusetts. This is same street that my great grandparents lived on.  With wife Margaret, and son David, aged 4.

Son – Edmond listed as age 11 in 1901 Census, and age 22 in 1911 Census

Daughter – Margaret listed as age 9 in 1901 Census.  Not in 1911 Census with family.   There is a marriage record from 1915 in Lawrence, Massachusetts for a Margaret Walsh from Ireland with parents William Walsh and Margaret Ford, marrying Martin Hamilton.  In 1920 U.S. Census, Martin and Margaret Hamilton are listed as living on Pleasant Terrace in Lawrence, Massachusetts, which is same street that my great grandparents lived on.  A Margaret Hamilton died in Lawrence, Massachusetts in 1927.

Daughter -  Ellen age 7 in 1901 Census, and age 19 in 1911 Census.  This is my great grandmother.  She married Patrick Gallahue.  She lived in Lawrence, Massachusetts until her death in 1962.

Daughter - Essy (probably Esther?) age 5 in 1901 Census, and age 17 in 1911 Census.

Son – William age 3 in 1901 Census, and age 14 in 1911 Census.

Any information about this family would be greatly appreciated.

  • The census shows that Willaiam and Margaret were indeed together in 1901 and 1911. The number 2 on the form is literally the number of the form when completed. The number 12 represents the twelth house that the ennumerator visited in the village.

The house was given a 2nd status - this is made up as follows:- the building was either brick, stone or concrete that = 1 point: The roof was thatch or wood so got a 0; there was 3 windows so t3 points and then because there was between 1-3 rooms in the house, they would get 2 more points. add these together gets you a 2nd rate house. Only one family lived in the house but that consisted of 8 people at the time of the census - so they were not well off but it was livable and they had a stable, a piggory, a fowl house and a cow shed. William leased his property from the Earl of Kingston and the Barony was Coshlea. You can look all this up in the Griffiths Valuation records 1847-1864 they are free and I have given you the Barony and the village, you will need to enter Ballylanders and limerick is the County.

There is 4 different Walsh families in the villge in the 1911 census and nine in the 1901.

Sadly I haven't been able to find the marriage record for William and Margaret but if you go to Roots.ie you may be lucky, I will keep looking too.So I would not confirm the name Forde until I am sure.

You may have made a mistake on your 1911 records as you have said Willam and MARY?? were married 26 years, perhaps you will check that. David was still in the house on 4th April 1911

I investigated the ship the Ivernia for both David and Patrick Gallahue, but I was not able to find it as there was 1980 plus records but you could do a search on Find my Past or by your records there in the Usa as they did keep brilliant records and they will tell you the date of arrival, their names, the village from where they came,  where they were going to stay and who their sponsor will have been.

I hope that this will help you in your search, I will keep an eye on the various programmes as new records are added almost daily

    Good Luck

    Jennifer Jean.
