There is now evidence that people lived here in Mesolithic times so our history is long and fascinating. The name Mungret may be derived from the Irish Muine Gairid, meaning 'the Short Hill', or 'the Short Thicket or Grove', although according to 'Limerick, the Rich Land', this definition was a guess by John O'Donovan in 1840. Other Irish forms of the name are Imungram and Moungairid.
Mungret Civil Parish is in the Barony of Pubblebrien (Griffiths Valuation 1852) at which time it contained 27 townlands.
In the 1901 Census, Mungret is found in the District Electoral Division of Ballycummin.
