Nenagh and its history.

Irish: Aonach Urmhumhan or An tAonach meaning ﾓThe Fair of Ormondﾔ.

A parish, in the Barony of Ormond Lower, Diocese of Killaloe and County of Tipperary. Nenagh was originally a market town and is today a  busy commercial town.

Nenagh, the largest town in North Tipperary, lies to the west of the Nenagh River, which flows into Lough Derg at Dromineer. The Silvermine Mountain range lies to the south of the town. The Silvermines have been mined for silver silver and metals for over seven hundred years. Traces of 19th century mine workings remain.

Historic attractions include Nenagh Castle, the Heritage Centre and a ruined Franciscan Abbey.

Nenagh Castle was built in 1216 approx. and was the main castle of the Butler family before they moved to Gowran, Co. Kilkenny. Other places of interest: St Maryﾒs of the Rosary Catholic Church. A neo-gothic church designed by the architect Walter G Doolin. The adjacent Church of Ireland, St. Maryﾒs  was built in or around 1862 and was designed by  architect Joseph Welland and features a stained glass window from the studio of Harry Clarke The building is striking in its simplicity in contrast to its larger and more ornate neighbour.

The town also contains the ruins of a Franciscan Friary, where the Annals of Nenagh were written.
