Hello !!

I'm trying to find information about my great, great grandfather John McIlwraith born in Antrim in 1835.

I have been able to ascertain that he married a Margaret Allan/Allen/Ullin (born 1831) on 22nd November 1856 at Lisburn Civil Registrars Office, Parish of Blaris, Civil District of Lisburn, County Antrim.

John and Margaret had a daughter Letita born in Antrim 1 March 1857 then migrated to Scotland where they had Catherine in 1859, then England where my great grandfather John Charles was born in 1865.

If anyone is able to assist me with family information in Antrim it would be greatly appreciated.

I am very interested in finding out if John's family originated from Ireland or as was quite common originated in Ayr, Scotland then migrated to Ireland.

Thanking you in advance and hoping to link up with other McIlwraiths !?

Kind regards,

Sally

  • Hi,

Did a little looking to see what could be found. Right away noticed that the spelling for Johns marriage record is different from what you give above. McIlwrath is the spelling used on the transcription.

Did see at LDS family search that you John was married at age 21 and wife Margaret Allen was also 21 at time of marriage, so both were born abt. 1835, according to this transcription.

This site is not saying where they obtained the data for the 1st record showing, but does state that Johns father is Charles McIlwrath. No mothers name is given. This is in keeping with Johns son being named John Charles. Do you know Johns Middle name or initial?

This same record also give Margarets father as Robert Allen and again no mother is listed.

Ireland, Marriages, 1619-1898," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGCL-HQ3 : accessed 26 Mar 2013), John Mcilwrath and Margaret Allen, 22 Nov 1856.

Further browsing through the LDS family search site reveals another record of this same marriage indexed slightly differently with no other data other than the marriage date and Johns name. However this record does give a little further data on where LDS transcribed it from.

Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FT1L-JTY : accessed 27 Mar 2013), John Mcilwrath, 1856; citing vol. 7, p. 146, General Registry, Custom House, Dublin, Ireland; FHL microfilm 101246.

As this is a general registry, it might be well worth sending for a copy as there is no indication at the LDS site of where residence was.  As the marriage was under general registry, I would think there should be some indication of where the people were registering from, a church perhaps, a parish, something.

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/RFW/#ChurchRecords you might be able to get a copy of Catherines birth record, which also might contain other data not easily viewed online, through Scotlands General Registry Office in conjunction with  http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/?ukwid=233738&sourceID=41&utm_source=Google+ScotlandsPeople_CPC&utm_medium=SEM_CPC&utm_campaign=US+Target&bsop_brand=SP&ns_mchannel=SEM_CPC&ns_source=Google+UK&ns_linkname=general+register+office+for+scotland&utm_term=general+register+office+for+scotland&ns_fee=0.75&gclid=CIOLg-CMnLYCFYdxQgodZVcArg Perhaps might indicate what religion or work John performed, which might tell you where to look for a record.

It does appear that there were numerous McIlwrath families within County Antrim as well as County Down. It also appears that McIlwrath families were also present in the town Catherine was born in Scotland, so although John may have been born in Ireland, his father Charles may well have been born in Scotland.  The following link may be of use to you, and may have data on your McIlwrath family. http://www.one-name.org/profiles/mcilwraith.html

I don?t know where you are posting from, so do not know if you can access the local family history center. Griffiths Valuation did not reveal a Charles McIlwrath, but there are 54 McIlwrath listings so perhaps Charles is a middle name or in business he used a middle name instead of Charles http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNameSearch&Submit.x=0&Submit.y=0&familyname=McIlwrath&firstname=&baronyname=&countyname=&unionname=&parishname=

Griffiths Valuation but does show a few Robert Allens? in the following locations http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNameSearch&Submit.x=0&Submit.y=0&familyname=Allen&firstname=Robert&baronyname=&countyname=&unionname=&parishname=

Hope this all helps & that the data is not something you already have. Jeanette
