I was unable to locate a civil marriage index record in Co. Antrim in 1888-1889 for a Thomas McCullough and variants married to someone named Mary. I did find an index record for a Thomas James M'Cullough in the Cookstown registration district which is in northeast Co. Tyrone. You will note that a Mary Nesbitt is one of the two possible spouses. I don't know if this is the correct Thomas. The 1911 census has Mary born in Co. Antrim but the 1901 census shows Co. Derry which is closer to northeast Tyrone. You can get a copy of this record from the General Register Office for around 4 euros. Instructions for contacting the GRO are below the index record.

Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event. registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.

  • The children have fairly distinctive names which means you could cross check on the mother?s maiden name by getting one of their birth certificates. Leslie Grantham McCullough?s birth was registered in Antrim town Oct ? Dec 1895 Volume 1, page 80. You can order a copy as per Roger?s instructions above, or you can now view it on-line by going to the GRONI website.

In case you haven?t seen them, PRONI have 3 probate files for the family. (Only the abstracts are on-line, the full files are still in paper form in PRONI).

Probate of the Will of Thomas James McCullough late of Clonboy County Antrim Farmer who died 25 April 1917 granted at Belfast to Mary McCullough the Widow Ernest McCullough and Leslie McCullough Farmers. Effects ?717

McCullough Mary of Clonboy county Antrim widow died 21 June 1945 Administration Belfast 7 November to Ernest McCullough farmer. Effects ?175 15s. 7d.

McCullough Ernest of Clonboy Randalstown county Antrim retired farmer died 21 September 1955 at Rose Cottage Toomebridge county Antrim Probate Belfast 10 January to James Whiteside farmer and Andrew Warwick auctioneer. Effects ?4885 12s. 11d.

Griffiths Valuation for 1862 lists a William McCullough on plot 11 in Clonboy. His name remains against that property until 1905 when Thomas replaces him. I would suspect therefore that William was Thomas?s father and died around 1900, as he isn?t in the 1901 census.
