Gormans of Finvoy

I looked at Griffiths for Ballymacaldrick in 1861 but don?t see a John Gorman there. I do see James farming on plot 14 and Henry on plot 16 (both of whom had moved away or died by 1869).

Rose Gorman seems to have married Joseph Dinsmore in 1870 (regd in Ballymoney for that year).

No Gormans in Ballymacaldrack or the immediate area in the 1901 census. The name is common enough in Co Antrim with over 410 of them, mostly in the Belfast area.

If you know the family?s religious denomination, your best bet may be to go through the Finvoy parish records to see if there were other children to Alexander Gorman and his wife. (Birth registration only started in Ireland in 1864, so prior to that you have to rely on church records).

I searched the current phone book for the BT44 area which includes Ballymacaldrack. There?s no-one in the phone book but there is a Paul Gorman on the voters lists in the general area. (Presumably he is either ex-directory or doesn?t have a landline).  It?s pay to view to see his address.

A James and William Gorman both married in 1899 in Belfast. Likewise a Sarah Jane in 1907 in Larne. In all 3 cases their fathers were named Alexander, but whether they are your family is not possible to say without further research.

I looked for a will for Alexander Gorman but he doesn?t appear to have left one. At least not one that was probated. Can?t see  a death for him in the Ballymoney area. Perhaps he died before 1864.

That is correct -- it is James Gorman, who the genealogist believed was the brother of Rose and John. I do know that Rose Gorman was Catholic. Thank you for the quick response.

Birth registration only started in Ireland in 1864 so you won?t find birth certificates for Rose or James. Finvoy is in the RC parish of Dunloy. Their baptisms start in 1840, so you might just find the siblings baptisms. Records from 1860 onwards are on-line on the Ulster Historical Foundation site but for earlier ones you need to look up the copy in PRONI in Belfast. (They are not on-line and so a personal visit is required to view them).
