Looking for information about the McCaldridge family, their surname changed to Alexander some time in the late 1800's before there was a move to Lanarkshire in Scotland.

Particular interest is the son of James Alexander (McCaldridge) and Jane Rainey - Henry Alexander born 6 April 1875.

I can find no trace of him after his birth. Jane Rainey died around 1887 and James married a Jane Mulholland.

Be grateful if anyone has any knowledge they could share.

James McCaldridge Alexander is my maternal 2nd Great Grandfather.

    According to the GRONI site, Henry Alexander’s date of birth was 17.3.1875, regd Ballymoney.

    James Alexander’s marriage to Jane Rainey regd Ballymoney 20.8.1872. Jane’s surname is indexed incorrectly as Leaney).

    Other children to that marriage:

    William Alexander 20.10.1876 and

    Sarah 6.2.1879 both regd Ballymoney.

    James Alexander’s marriage to Jane Mulholland registered in Ballymoney on 1.3.1888. Daughter Rachel born 28.6.1892 Ballymoney. You can view the original certificates on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

    You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2.50 (sterling) to a view a certificate.

    Only 1 McCaldridge in Ireland in the 1901 census. Looks as though the name change occurred after the family moved to Scotland.

    I looked for Jane Alexander’s death around Ballymoney 1879 – 1888 but could not see it.

    It is quite surprising to find the name change.

    I found some Mccaldrid / McCaldrides in Argyll Scotland so thought they may be connected but I can't find this connection.

  • This may be a long shot but I've just come across this while researching my grandfather, Thomas Alexander who I believe was George McCaldridge's son who changed his name to Alexander when he moved to Scotland. I have an old photo of George Alexander and his brother Bill (William John Alexander).

    Thomas/Tommy, was a wonderful man!
